Amazon's Tomb Raider series has reportedly been cancelled

Amazon's ambitious attempt to bring Tomb Raider to the small screen appears to have met an untimely end.

Amazon’s bold initiative to transform the legendary video game franchise Tomb Raider into a television series appears to have reached its end. Daily Mail reported that the project has been scrapped due to mounting creative and financial hurdles.

Initially announced for Amazon Prime Video and led by Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the series was poised to bring a fresh narrative to one of the most iconic video game characters of all time in Lara Croft. Early reports suggested that the project was one of Amazon's most ambitious attempts to expand its adaptation portfolio, even hinting at Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner being eyed for the titular role.

However, despite the substantial investment—reportedly amounting to tens of millions—the series could not overcome internal challenges. Two separate writers’ rooms were convened, yet they failed to produce a finalized script. This dilemma, compounded with schedule conflicts from potential leads and the departure of key executives, essentially sealed the project’s fate.

Amazon has yet to issue a formal statement confirming the cancellation.

The reported cancellation of Amazon’s Tomb Raider series stands as a cautionary tale in the ongoing era of video game adaptations. High-profile successes like The Last of Us and even other ambitious projects have shown that while the potential for live-action video game adaptations is immense, achieving a delicate balance between source material fidelity and innovative storytelling is no small feat.

While fans of Tomb Raider may have been disappointed by the cancellation, all is not lost for the legacy. Crystal Dynamics, the veteran studio behind modern Tomb Raider games, continues to develop the next chapter of the series with Unreal Engine 5.
