Magic: The Gathering live-action movie eyes a director
The live-action adaptation of Hasbro Entertainment’s collectible card game Magic: The Gathering is taking shape. Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro are aiming to turn the card game into a widespread live-action franchise, inclusive of both TV and movie universes. This will be Hasbro’s second attempt to kick off a live-action franchise in recent years, following Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Unlike the Dungeons & Dragons movie, however, Hasbro is looking to start up a whole franchise without staying limited to a single live-action project. The Magic: The Gathering movie started eyeing a specific director this week, as well: Matt Johnson. Johnson is best known for his most recent work, BlackBerry, a biographical movie covering the titular phone’s rise and subsequent downfall in global popularity.
According to Deadline, however, neither Legendary nor Hasbro has confirmed the news. The outlet reports that a formal offer has not been made to Johnson, but also that “he is the choice to direct.” The movie has not picked up a writer, nor has it announced any plot details of any kind. Magic: The Gathering is known as the first trading card game of its kind, and has become Hasbro’s first US$1 billion brand. Hence, a lot is riding on this movie to work.
The Magic: The Gathering movie has no release date yet. Also in store for fans of the trading card game: SpongeBob SquarePants memes and a Final Fantasy crossover!
