Mahou shoujo skins, new heroes, and more are coming to Overwatch 2.

Blizzard Entertainment has announced two new heroes coming to Overwatch 2. The first is Freja, a bounty hunter from Denmark who joins the roster in Season 16. In Season 18, players will also get to play as a Chinese hero codenamed Aqua, who wields water-based abilities.

Additionally, we now know Season 16’s anime-inspired theme: DokiWatch, with cosmetics inspired by the mahou shoujo (magical girl) genre.

Meet Overwatch 2’s next heroes: Freja and Aqua

Blizzard has officially unveiled the next two heroes joining Overwatch 2’s playable roster in 2025. The first to arrive is Freja, a former member of Overwatch who used to work in its search and rescue team. Now, she’s a fearsome bounty hunter with trapper-like abilities and a crossbow. During this week’s Spotlight stream, Blizzard developers described her as a hero with a high skill ceiling who requires precise aim to master.

Freja’s main weapon is a Revdraw Crossbow, which can either fire a single-shot explosive bolt or a flurry of rapid-fire normal bolts. She can also Quick Dash in any direction to reload her explosive bolt or make a speedy escape. She can gain elevation by launching herself upwards using an Updraft of wind, and trap an enemy with an explosive Bola Shot.

The latter ability seems to trap enemies in place, much like Junkrat’s Steel Trap. Freja will join Overwatch 2’s roster in Season 16, but as per all previous heroes since Mauga’s release, players will also be able to try her out in Season 15 during a free trial weekend. Blizzard will unveil the weekend’s date and details later.

Overwatch’s 44th hero is codenamed Aqua. This Chinese hero will likely get a new name before his release in Season 18, but is otherwise described as “wielding water-based abilities that can manipulate the battlefield with an innovative playstyle.”

Overwatch 2’s DokiWatch skins and LE SSERAFIM collab return

Overwatch 2 also unveiled its upcoming slate of seasonal cosmetics, which include a Pixiu Zenyatta Mythic skin and Widowmaker Mythic weapon in Season 15. Season 16 pulls from the world of anime with DokiWatch-themed skins, including a Juno Mythic skin and Mercy Mythic weapon, and all-new cosmetics reimagining the heroes of Overwatch as magical girls.

Season 17 will also see the addition of D.Va’s first Mythic skin, inspired by South Korea’s national animal, the Siberian tiger. Reaper will also gain a Mythic weapon. Additionally, LE SSERAFIM are partnering up with Overwatch 2 to bring their collab skins back in Season 15, though it’s unclear if new skins might be thrown into the mix as well.
