Black Myth: Wukong game developer Game Science has released a new patch for the record-breaking GOTY nominee.

Released on December 10, the latest Black Myth: Wukong update, version 1.0.12.16581, features tons of new features, including an all new game mode called "Challenge." This is a boss rush mode that pits players against old rivals or hordes of enemies in a series of battles, and will be available after completing the game at least once. Players will be able to find the mode at any Keeper’s Shrine.

The Challenge mode will have two variations for players to test their mettle: “Return of Rivals” and “Gauntlet of Legends.” In “Return of Rivals,” players can challenge a former opponent to a duel, and will be able to choose from three levels of difficulty. If by chance any opponents are undefeated in the main game, they will be unavailable for battle in the Challenge mode.

Meanwhile, in “Gauntlet of Legends,” players will be able to fight multiple opponents in succession with customised curses available to tailor the difficulty. Game Science warned players that this mode will be particularly difficult, as old opponents may come up with new moves in order to amp up the difficulty. As with “Return of Rivals,” any undefeated opponents in the main game will not have their gauntlet available in this particular Challenge mode.

Undergoing the Challenge mode will net players some rare treasures, which include:

  • Medicine: Glimmering Scale Pellets, including its formula,
  • Drink and Soaks: Sour Wine, Frost-Enduring Chrysanth, and Robust Antler,
  • Curios: Stone Tiger Tally, Ever-Burning Palace Lantern, and Fragment of the Ocean-Settling Pillar,
  • Equipment: Three Hill Crown,
  • Weapons: Qing Mallet, Fanged Cyan Staff, and Leeching Centipede Staff.

The update will also include a new game feature in the “Journeyer’s Chart,” which is essentially Black Myth: Wukong’s version of an in-game map. Players will be able to unlock this when they first enter Black Wind Mountain and meet a Keeper, and afterwards purchase other Journeyer’s Charts for each new territory at the Keeper’s Shrine.

New equipment in the ‘Armor Set of Opulence’ have also been added. This armor set was crafted with the purpose of celebrating the upcoming Chinese New Year in 2025, and can be claimed by all players directly through “Trailblazer’s Gift” at any Keeper’s Shrine.

Black Myth: Wukong broke records and became one of the fastest- selling games of all time after its release last August 19, earning over $700 million in revenue in just two weeks with 18 million copies sold across PC and PlayStation 5. The game also surpassed 2.13 million concurrent players on Steam during its worldwide launch, breaking both Palworld and Counter-Strike 2's records.

Black Myth: Wukong is currently in the running for The Game Award’s Game of the Year alongside Metaphor: ReFantazio, Balatro, and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
