Take a gander at these nostalgic PlayStation themes (and big sales) before they’re gone.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has released a new update that finally brings themes to the PlayStation 5 – sort of. The console is getting a new feature update that allows players to redesign their home screen with visuals and sounds themed after the entire PlayStation series of consoles – from 1994’s PlayStation 1 to 2013’s PlayStation 4.
The update is being released in conjunction with PlayStation’s 30th anniversary celebrations, which include a new limited-time sale on the PlayStation Store.
PlayStation 5 delivers a dose of nostalgia for 30th anniversary
If you’ve been waiting for themes to come to the PS5, here’s the next best thing. Thanks to a new PS5 update released during the 30th anniversary of the release of the PlayStation 1 in 1994, users can now customise their home screens with retro visuals and sound effects from PlayStation history. However, it should be noted that this feature will only be available for a limited time, and its endpoint is unknown.
There are four different themes: a PS1 theme that brings the original console’s grey design to the home screen along with its iconic bootup sound, a PS2 theme with the floaty PlayStation icons, a PS3 theme with the classic wave design, and a PS4 theme with its own unique wavy patterns. Each theme also comes with its respective console’s sound effects.
To try out these themes, all you have to do is update your PS5 or PS5 Pro and select which theme you want upon startup. It should be noted that if you were lucky enough to get the PS5 Pro retro variation featuring familiar PS1 imagery, the PS1 theme will be a nice little cherry on top of that rather pricey cake.
That’s not all, though – the PlayStation Store is also hosting a 30th Anniversary Sale ending on December 20, 2024, featuring discounts for first-party games like The Last of Us Part 2, God of War, Days Gone, and even more third-party titles. You can find a full list of all the discounted games here.
