This might be our first glimpse at the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con successor.
Nintendo hasn’t officially revealed its upcoming successor to the Nintendo Switch, but a few leaked images might have just given us our best look yet at the device’s all-new controllers. A video shared on the Chinese social media platform Bilibili has allegedly given an early look at Nintendo’s next generation of Joy-Con controllers.
The controllers appear to have magnets, infrared cameras and slightly different buttons - including new ones on their backs.
Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con design allegedly leaked in new images
Earlier rumours may have pointed to Nintendo revealing its successor to the Nintendo Switch earlier in Fall of this year, but it’s clear that plans have changed at the company internally. While Nintendo keeps details of its upcoming gaming console secret however, a Bilibili user going by the username 马里奥68 claims to have access to footage of its new Joy-Cons.
Seeing as this footage comes from a third-party source rather than Nintendo itself, it’s worth taking them with a grain of salt. However, the images do line up with previous leaks we’ve seen for the controllers – which pointed to them having a rounder design and, notably, magnets that allow them to grip onto the Switch easily. This means that you wouldn’t have to slide the Joy-Cons off anymore – you would be able to simply snap them off.
The video also allegedly reveals that the new Joy-Cons come with infrared cameras and new pedal buttons on their backs, though for what purpose the latter addition serves is currently unknown. The controller’s shoulder buttons are also a little bigger. Otherwise however, these controllers do not provide a drastic departure from the current-generation counterparts – they almost look like a variation of the Joy-Con, rather than an all-new upgrade.
It’s likely that the Nintendo Switch successor itself is going to fall in line with the original in terms of aesthetics alone, so expect the same sense of familiarity for its accessories too. We’ll know more about the Nintendo Switch 2 when Nintendo chooses to reveal it in full, hopefully along with its lineup of first-party games in 2025, which are currently mostly unknown. Except for Metroid Prime 4, that is.
We do know a few things about the Nintendo Switch successor however, which you can read up on here.
