PC Hunters still flocked to the Monster Hunter Wilds open beta even if they were fighting low poly monsters.
With Monster Hunter Wilds’ Open Beta Test (OBT) reaching its conclusion today, November 4, it’s safe to say that fans of the franchise on PC had a blast even if some of them encountered graphics issues.
According to SteamDB, the OBT for Wilds peaked at 463,798 hunters online at launch, beating Monster Hunter Worlds’ peak of 334,648 players when the full game launched six years ago. The Wilds OBT also registered the third highest concurrent player count for a new release on Steam this year, trailing behind Black Myth Wukong and Palworld respectively.
This is a notable achievement for developer Capcom, considering that unlike Black Myth Wukong and Palword, which registered their peak player count with a full release, Monster Hunter Wilds only had a three-day open beta. This data from SteamDB is based only on Steam players, so the numbers may be even higher if we take Playstation and Xbox players into account, though there is no publicly available information on player counts for those platforms.
Monster Hunter Wilds is set for a full release on February 28, 2025.
Low Poly Hunter Wilds
Even though Monster Hunter Wilds registered record-breaking numbers during its OBT, some hunters on PC encountered significant graphics issues which included slow rendering, poly models, and a generally blurry and cloudy playthrough.
To combat the graphics issue, Capcom released a statement that directed players to the troubleshooting guide. The developer also reiterated that the issue will be resolved upon the game’s full release, noting that the afterimage noise issue is now significantly better compared to the OBT.
Players still can’t help but comment on the graphics issue making in-game models look like a blast from the past, specifically from the N64.
