An ambitious videogame set in the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe is in the works.

Paramount Game Studios and Saber Interactive have announced an ambitious new action-RPG set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The game is being produced in partnership with Avatar Studios, a new Nickelodeon division focused on making new projects in the Avatar franchise. The division is helmed by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the creators of the original series.

New Avatar: The Last Airbender action-RPG announced

According to IGN, a AAA action-RPG set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender is currently in the works with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 developer Saber Interactive helming the project with Paramount Game Studios. However, the game reportedly won’t feature Aang as a main playable character, nor will it feature any of his friends.

Instead, the game will allow players to step into the shoes of an “all-new, never-before-seen Avatar" in a story set thousands of years in the past. IGN reports that players “can expect to be immersed in a vibrant world, master all four elements, engage in dynamic combat alongside companions, and experience the challenges and decisions that come with being the keeper of balance in the world." Interestingly, the game is also said to have elements both “new and familiar” to fans.

This is meant to be “the biggest videogame in franchise history,” according to the companies, and is in development for PC and console platforms. The game will tell a new story - hence its new characters - that’s being developed in “close collaboration” with Avatar Studios. It will also fit into the ‘Avatar Legends’ universe, a brand Nickelodeon uses to encompass all media set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Saber Interactive’s head of IP development and licensing Josh Austin commented on the announcement, saying:

At Saber, we are all truly fans of the IP we work with. Our team members are some of the most devoted, passionate creatives out there and it’s an honor to join forces with Avatar Studios and Paramount Games to further expand the Avatar Legends universe in video games. This unique co-fund structure is a result of our ever-expanding collaboration with Paramount, which started over a decade ago with WWZ, and we’re excited for all that’s on the horizon.

Avatar Studios’ next project will be released long before this game sees the light of day: an animated film sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender, set to hit theaters on January 30, 2026. Two more animated movies are in the works for the franchise. Two more seasons of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender are also in the works.
