Warner Bros.’ crossover-laden fighting game MultiVersus is making a comeback.
Warner Bros. Games’ is officially bringing MultiVersus back on May 28 with new stages, mechanics, modes and updated visuals. Developer Player First Games announced the game’s big comeback this week after it was taken offline in June 2023 to head back into development. The game will launch almost a full year after its hiatus, with the same mix of Game of Thrones, DC Comics, Scooby-Doo and more characters bulking up its fighting roster.

MultiVersus returns this May with new content
The Super Smash Bros.-like fighting game MultiVersus is mounting a comeback this May. After originally languishing in early access and an open beta with two seasons of content, developer Player First Games announced last year that the game was heading back into development and thus would be taken offline. At the time, it was explained that the game’s open beta period was simply coming to an end - a puzzling move, as it was already pushing microtransactions, battle passes and updates to players like a fully-launched live-service game would.
Whatever the case, the fighting game returns on May 28 with the same characters from DC Comics, Looney Tunes, Adventure Time, Game of Thrones and more in its playable roster. No new characters have been named, but they’re practically inevitable given the game’s extra year of development. What we do know is that MultiVersus has moved development from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5, which the developer says will, “improve visuals and character lighting.”
The game has also been rebuilt to support, “our new netcode,” for more accurate gameplay and performance, and we’ve also spotted a few new stages in the announcement video above. The developer also promises a new PvE mode which should let players work together for unique rewards, though exact details will be shared later. It only took two seasons of the open beta for players to get frustrated at the game’s grindy reward system and slow stream of updates. Hopefully, this extra development time has prepared MultiVersus for a better launch year than its first.
MultiVersus will launch on May 28 as a free-to-play game on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
