Assassin’s Creed Origins gets review-bombed on Steam for being unplayable after Windows 11 update

The game even went on sale on Steam in December despite ongoing issues.

The issues faced by Ubisoft games continue to persist through the new year, which have made Steam players angry to the point that Assassin’s Creed Origins has been getting review-bombed. The cause of player distress? The game is almost completely unplayable right after Microsoft’s 24H2 Windows 11 Update.

The issues first surfaced in November, affecting other Ubisoft games such as Star Wars Outlaws, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and Assassin’s Creed Origins.

And although a “temporary mitigation” had already been released for Star Wars Outlaws, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Assassins Creed Origins continue to suffer, with the latter's recent ratings dropping from “Very Positive” to “Mixed”.

Negative reviews started pouring in from early December 2024 up until January 2025. The complaints were mostly about the game crashing within a few minutes caused by the incompatibility issues from the Windows 11 update that bricks the game, rendering it unplayable.

Some negative reviews, like Steam user Hard-joe complained that they got the game on sale in December despite having existing problems.

“Why give a big discount but the game is not playable on PC? SHAME U UBISOFT. i ll never buy ur game anymore even [if] IT’S ON SALE!” they wrote. Similar reviewers shared the same complaint, having bought the game on sale in December since they were unaware of the ongoing issues.

Another user, AangTheGamer, complained that the game doesn’t even launch despite being on Windows 10.

“Ubi is suggesting to roll back to a previous version of Windows and giving standard canned workaround responses that won't fix the issue in an attempt to put the onus on the customer,” Steam user hellion shared.

Ubisoft devs have responded to some reviews. “I am very sorry to hear that you're also running into this crashing issue with Assassin's Creed Origins,” they wrote as Ubi-oof on Steam.

“I can confirm that it has been reported for investigation and our teams are already working towards a resolution with Microsoft.[learn.microsoft.com] Once new information is available, it will be provided through official channels.”

Ubisoft also advised players to avoid manually updating to version 24H2 using the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or the media creation tool until a solution is implemented. If the game becomes unresponsive, you can use Task Manager to force close the application.
