The final part of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy has entered development.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is nearing its end. During a recent G-Star 2024 conference, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s game director Naoki Hamaguchi and producer Yoshinori Kitase confirmed that the trilogy’s final installment already has a complete plot, and has now entered full development.

The duo also confirmed that players will be able to take to the skies in the third game, thanks to Cloud and friends’ new Highwind airship.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy’s final instalment heads into development

Final Fantasy 7 is a game so beloved that it took an entire trilogy to be remade, but that trilogy is nearing its end. The game trilogy’s midpoint and most recent instalment, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, was just released earlier this year – but its developers are already jumping into work on its eventual sequel.

During a presentation at G-Star 2024 in South Korea, Final Fantasy 7 Remake series developers Naoki Hamaguchi and Yoshinori Kitase made an appearance to discuss the game trilogy and its highly-anticipated final instalment. According to 4Gamer, the game’s plot and concept “has now been completed,” which means that Square Enix can now begin development of the game in earnest.

While the two developers weren’t able to tell players exactly what they can expect from Cloud and Sephiroth’s final outing, they did confirm that the original 1997’s Highwind airship vehicle will return. In the original game, players could travel around the world map using the Highwind, but Kitase confirmed that Square Enix does not plan to “cheat with the airship system, but challenge it head-on so that players can freely fly around the map."

He said, “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth offered a vast map, but if we think in terms of the original version, the third game will have the Highwind (airship), so we need to let people experience the world from a higher perspective.” Considering the sheer size of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, this seems like quite the undertaking for Square Enix; a large driveable vehicle that players can pilot across multiple locations, many of which they have already visited.

While it’s heartening to know that development has officially kicked off on this trilogy’s final instalment, don’t expect it to arrive anytime soon. The game does not have a release date yet. It doesn’t even have a name!
