Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s first trailer finally brings Shadow into the fray.

Paramount Pictures’ next Sonic the Hedgehog movie adaptation is a threequel. As is usually the case with most trilogy-cappers, this one looks a lot edgier. While the trailer begins with Sonic having more lighthearted adventures with Knuckles and Tails, things take a turn when we’re introduced to Project Shadow.
Project Shadow is revealed to be a red-striped black hedgehog born from a secret government project, who comes head-to-head with Sonic and his friends. We’re told that Shadow the Hedgehog’s story began much like Sonic, but where the blue speedster “found friends, Shadow only found pain and loss.” That might help explain why Shadow is leaving a path of destruction for Sonic to follow.
This trailer also confirms that Jim Carrey is making an unexpected return to acting after announcing his retirement in 2022, and for a dual role no less. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Carrey will play a villain-turned-ally as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, as well as his grandfather Gerald Robotnik. Fans of the Sega games will know that Gerald was heavily involved in Shadow’s backstory, so seeing him pop up here isn’t too surprising.
Keanu Reeves will play Shadow the Hedgehog in this sequel, reuniting him with fellow Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty castmember Idris Elba, who plays Knuckles the Echidna. Ben Schwartz and Colleen O'Shaughnessey return as Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles ‘Tails’ Prower, respectively.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hits theaters on December 20, 2024.
