Nintendo has officially announced the existence of the Nintendo Switch 2, but it’s not ready for a full reveal yet.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa dropped a surprising announcement this week on Twitter/X, confirming that the Nintendo Switch 2 is real. While Furukawa stopped short of actually calling the device ‘Nintendo Switch 2’, he confirmed that a full reveal is coming, “within this fiscal year,” which ends on March 31, 2025.
Furukawa also confirmed that a Nintendo Direct will also happen this June in the absence of E3, though there will be, “no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”
Nintendo Switch 2 announcement happening by March 2025
President of Nintendo Shuntaro Furukawa posted a message on Twitter/X this week, outlining its future plans for the successor to the Nintendo Switch. While various rumours and reports have already detailed the so-called Nintendo Switch 2’s technical specifications, this is the first time Nintendo has directly confirmed its existence to the public. It seems that the message is mostly intended to dial back expectations for its upcoming Nintendo Direct however, as it won’t touch on the new console whatsoever.
Furukawa’s message reads:
This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.
Nintendo’s current fiscal year ends on March 31, 2025, so we should get a Switch 2 announcement by then. That lines up with previous reports that the company had delayed the console to the first quarter of 2025. To tide people over until then, Nintendo is going to host a Nintendo Direct to show off the rest of its games launching in the second half of 2024. The company doesn’t seem to have much in the tank left for this console generation however, so don't expect too many first-party games to appear in the presentation.
