Ubisoft's first gameplay showcase for Star Wars Outlaws looks like Uncharted in space, in the best way possible.
Ubisoft showed off gameplay for Star Wars Outlaws, the upcoming open-world game in development at Massive Entertainment, the creators of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and The Division. It looks equally as stunning as Frontiers of Pandora however, with multiple exploreable planets and space combat to boot. Star Wars Outlaws launches in 2024.
Watch the gameplay trailer below:
In the gameplay trailer, we see Kay explore a cantina in Janta's Hope following a messy shootout in a hostile enemy base. While there, she meets up with a grumpy droid who warns her to stay frosty before meeting up with the Mon Calamari crime lord who sent her on a job. Kay is offered a choice between bribing or not bribing an Imperial officer while in the cantina, and choosing not to leads the Empire to hunt her down while in town.
Kay then seamlessly takes to orbit in her spaceship after leaving the planet, even with the Empire hot on her tail. She jumps to hyperdrive while in the midst of space combat, reaching a corner of the galaxy called the Akiva System. The trailer then shows off multiple impressive-looking environments, from dingy run-down planets like Tatooine to more cyberpunk-themed towns and Imperial bases. This game has a huge scope, and it doesn't mind showing it off.
Outlaws is set in between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, with the Galactic Empire aggressively pursuing an end to the Rebel Alliance. The criminal underworld has never been in a better spot with all this conflict brewing, and in the eye of the storm is a cunning scoundrel named Kay Vess (Humberly Gonzalez) and her axolotl-like animal companion Nix (Dee Bradley Baker). The duo are forced to commit one of the biggest heists the Outer Rim has ever seen in order to start a new life and get rid of a massive bounty placed on Kay’s head.
Unfortunately, that also means that Kay will have to fight her way through the galaxy’s many crime syndicates and become one of the galaxy’s most wanted in the process. Here’s how Ubisoft describes Outlaws’ gameplay:
Cunning scoundrel Kay Vess and her companion Nix travel across the galaxy to distinct locations, both iconic and new, from the humid jungles of Akiva to the windswept savannah of Toshara. Kay will explore bustling cities and cantinas, race across sprawling outdoor landscapes on her speeder, and pilot her ship the Trailblazer through the wilds of space. When things go awry, the Trailblazer will also help them chase, evade and attack to gain the upper hand in thrilling dogfights with The Empire and other foes.
Players can either use stealth and gadgets to get through enemy bases undetected, or engage in blaster combat once spotted during their various missions. Kay and Nix will also make plenty of friends along the way, including the previously-mentioned grumpy droid ND-5 (Jay Rincon). The game also plays with choices and consequences throughout gameplay, though we have no word on how these choices might affect the full story for now.
Star Wars Outlaws launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2024.
