Heroes of Newerth has teased a potential comeback

Who remembers our good ol' Kongor?

Heroes of Newerth (HoN), one of the big three MOBAs of the early 2010's alongside Dota 2 and League of Legends, has a teased a possible return when its official X account suddenly posted an image of a fiery egg – implying the game may rise from the ashes like a phoenix after ceasing operations in 2022.

The image garnered over 100,000 impressions on X alone, with many former HoN players rejoicing over the possibility of the game making a comeback.

While no official announcement was made, the HoN community were quick to speculate that the image was a phoenix's egg symbolising their beloved game's revival. The game's social media account also changed its profile picture to an all-black Heroes of Newerth logo, making the community even more hopeful for its return.

HoN was developed by S2 Games, inspired from the original Defence of the Ancients (DotA) mod for Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne that spawned the MOBA genre. The game was an instant success to MOBA fans, competing with Riot Games' League of Legends and, eventually, the direct successor of the original DotA mod: Valve Software's Dota 2.

Despite its initial success, HoN was unable to keep up with Dota 2 and League of Legends, spiraling into decline into the 2020's. In June 2022, the game server was officially closed. While player-maintained community server was still active, the official game itself didn't receive any more updates from the original developers.

The official HoN social media accounts stopped posting updates since the game was shut down, but this sudden tease of a potential revival has rejuvenated the community – bringing hope, once more, that new life could be breathed into the MOBA genre that has been dominated by Dota 2 and League of Legends for the longest time.
