No release window has been announced for both film adaptations.
Sony’s CES 2025 press conference delivered some thrilling news for gamers, with the announcement of film adaptations for two popular games: 202024 co-op FPS hit Helldivers 2 and the critically acclaimed 2017 action RPG Horizon Zero Dawn.
Helldivers 2 will deliver democracy on screen as a film adaptation
The Helldivers 2 movie will be developed by Sony Productions in partnership with Sony pictures.
"Looking ahead as to what might come next, I'm excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2," Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, said onstage at CES.
Helldivers 2, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios became the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game of all time, selling 12 million copies in just 12 weeks.
Set in a dystopian sci-fi universe, players are elite soldiers who are part of Super Earth Command, tasked with liberating planets across the galaxy from Automatons and bugs called Terminids, to spread the influence of “Managed Democracy.”
The game recently saw a resurgence thanks to the Illuminate update, which introduced a third faction that players can fight against.
Aloy’s epic journey heads to the big screen with the Horizon Zero Dawn film adaptation
Horizon Zero Dawn, on the other hand, will be a collaboration between Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions.
Qizilbash confirmed onstage that the project is “at the early stages of developing a film adaptation.”
“Just imagine, Aloy's beloved origin story set in a vibrant, far-future world filled with giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen," he added.
Developed by Guerilla Games, Horizon Zero Dawn is an open-world action RPG that takes players into a post-apocalyptic world dominated by robotic creatures, with tribal societies fighting for survival.
The story follows Aloy, a young hunter and archer, seeking to unravel the mysteries of her past and the collapse of the advanced civilisation. The 2017 PlayStation release remains to be one of the platform’s most iconic titles.
No further details, including a release window, have been shared for both games. It was also announced that another popular game, Ghost Tsushima will get an anime adaptation by Sony-owned Crunchyroll, which will be released in 2027.
