Doom: The Dark Ages shows off a BFG crossbow, breathtaking cinematics, and big battles in a new trailer.
Id Software popped up at WrestleMania 41 this week to drop a new trailer for its upcoming shooter Doom: The Dark Ages. The connection? Wrestler Drew McIntyre showed up in costume as the Doomguy himself. The new installment of this seminal first-person shooter franchise takes players back to a bygone era, where the Doomguy is beating back the forces of hell as part of the Sentinels.

Doom: The Dark Ages’ new trailer shows off campaign cinematics
After giving the Doomguy’s story a seemingly conclusive end in Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods, developer id Software is turning back time to explore the demon-killer’s past. Doom: The Dark Ages is a prequel set long before the events of Doom (2016), following the Doomguy’s battle against the forces of hell as part of a warrior caste known as the Sentinels.
Unlike previous gameplay-heavy trailers, this video focuses on the game’s story. Flashy cinematics show off the hordes of hell, before we are introduced to this game’s big bad: a tall fleshy demon who's said to be just as powerful as the Doomguy himself. Unfortunately, the Sentinels–or rather, those in charge of the Sentinels–have put a leash on the Doomguy, leaving the poor bloke outside of his right mind.
Given his power, the Sentinel forces have taken to deploying the Doomguy as the ultimate weapon, as a last resort to beat back the forces of hell. In turn, hell itself seems to have issued a new commander to take this world back as its own. It's unclear if we'll ever see our incredibly angry protagonist unchained over the course of this campaign, but it doesn't appear to be holding him back. When the rip-and-tear metal soundtrack heats up, we see him blast and parry his way through the armies of hell through actual gameplay.
We then see more gameplay teases of weapons we didn't know of before, such as the return of Doom Eternal’s shoulder cannon. We also see this game's version of the BFG, a medieval crossbow. There's also the appearance of what appears to be an alternate take on the Icon of Sin: a cyborg Cthulhu from the pages of Lovecraftian horror.
Doom: The Dark Ages launches on 15 May, 2025.
