Overwatch 2 introduces Stadium mode with third-person perspective and customisable hero kits

Overwatch 2 has unveiled Stadium, a brand-new permanent mode with a third-person perspective.

Overwatch 2 has unveiled Stadium, a brand-new permanent game mode that is set to launch on 22 April, 2025.  This mode introduces a best-of-seven, round-based format with a third-person perspective, the latter of which is a feature long requested by the community. Players will compete in five versus five batles, utilizing Stadium Cash to purchase upgrades and enhance their towers.

How does Stadium work in Overwatch 2?

Stadium incorporates three internal modes: Push, Control, and Clash. At launch, only 17 heroes will be available to play. More heroes will be added in future seasons. The mode also features a role queue system with 1 Tank, 2 Damage, and 2 Support heroes. Players can purchase items and powers between rounds to modify their abilities using the aforementioned Stadium Cash. Stadium Cash is rewarded to players based on their in-game performance.

Blizzard has also introduced ranked leagues for Stadium, allowing players to climb competitive tiers such as Rookie, Novice, Contender, Elite, Pro, All-Star, and Legend. This ranking system aims to provide a competitive progression path, and rewards players with exclusive Stadium Mode cosmetics and achievements.

Beyond Stadium Mode, Overwatch 2 recently introduced the players to Perks, a new gameplay mechanic launching in Season 15. Perks allow players to customize their heroes with passive and major ability upgrades, fundamentally altering how characters play. This system aims to provide deeper strategic options and enhance the competitive experience.

Blizzard has also announced the return of loot boxes to Overwatch 2, a controversial monetisation system that was previously removed. While some players welcome the return of randomized rewards, others remain skeptical about its impact on game balance.
