With over 10 million players joining the hunt in its first month, Monster Hunter Wilds has cemented itself as Capcom's biggest title yet.
Capcom has revealed that Monster Hunter Wilds, the latest mainline entry in the developer's classic Monster Hunter series, has sold over 10 million copies across all platforms in the first month since it released back in 28 February.
Capcom revealed this huge milestone in a press release on Monday (31 March), adding that this has also broken the record for the most copies sold by a Capcom title in a single month. The developer attributed Monster Hunter Wilds' massive success to the game's combination of the Monster Hunter series' appeal and new features, such as rich and dynamic open-world environments and a series-first multiplayer cross-play feature, among others.
Much of the 10 million copies sold by Monster Hunter Wilds in its first month came during the game's highly-anticipated launch weekend, which saw the game sell over eight million copies in its first three days. That notably made Monster Hunter Wilds the fastest Capcom title to reach the eight million milestone.
On PC, Monster Hunter Wilds hit over 1.3 million concurrent players on Steam mere hours after its release. According to SteamDB, Monster Hunter Wilds holds the fifth-highest all-time concurrent player count at 1.38 million, and was even a significant factor in Steam setting a record-breaking concurrent player count of 40 million during its launch weekend.
Monster Hunter Wilds' staggering launch numbers on Steam notably dwarfed the peak concurrent player counts of the series' two previous titles, with Monster Hunter World peaking at over 334,000 and Monster Hunter Rise at over 231,000.
While player numbers for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are not publicly available, Monster Hunter Wilds did break the record for the biggest physical launch of any PS5 game in Japan.
Future updates for Monster Hunter Wilds in the works
Capcom said that they will be looking to build on the massive success of Monster Hunter Wilds by constantly improving the game through free Title Updates. Monster Hunter Wilds' Title Update 1 is set to release on 4 April and will feature the release of a returning monster in Mizutsune, two new hunts for High Rank Zoh Shia and Arch-tempered Rey Dau, the Grand Hub area, and more.
The game's second Title Update is also already set for a Summer release, with fan-favourite returning monster Lagiacrus confirmed to be among the new content coming with that update.
In addition, a ‘G-Rank’ DLC expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds – a la Iceborne for Monster Hunter World and Sunbreak for Monster Hunter Rise – is also expected to be released in around a year.
“Capcom remains firmly committed to satisfying the expectations of all users by leveraging its industry leading game development capabilities in order to create highly entertaining gameplay experiences,” said Capcom.
What is Monster Hunter Wilds?
Monster Hunter Wilds is the latest mainline entry to Capcom's classic Monster Hunter series, which started all the way back in 2004 with the titular first entry. In Monster Hunter Wilds, players will take on the role of the Hunter of the Avis Unit, tasked with leading an expedition in the Forbidden Lands. The region was previously thought uninhabited, but actually hosts multiple tribes living amidst the ruins of a long-gone civilisation. The Hunter will also be helping a boy named Nata reunite with his tribe after an attack by a mysterious monster called the ‘White Wraith’ caused him to become marooned in the Forbidden Lands' border desert regions.
As one would expect from a game called Monster Hunter, players will be hunting monsters of all shapes and sizes, ranging from the oversized frog monster ‘Chatacabra’, the flying wyvern ‘Rey Dau’ that shoots lightning out of its railgun-shaped head, to colossal behemoths like ‘Jin Dahaad’.
The Hunter can make use of 14 different weapon classes, namely the Long Sword, Great Sword, Sword and Shield, Dual Blades, Hammer, Hunting Horn, Lance, Gunlance, Switch Axe, Charge Blade, Insect Glaive, Bow, Light Bowgun, and Heavy Bowgun. Players can also explore the wilderness of the Forbidden Lands atop their raptor-like ‘Seikret’ mount and will be accompanied in hunts by an adorable Palico, a bipedal cat creature from a species called ‘Felynes’ that assists hunters in battle.
Monster Hunter Wilds launched globally on 28 February, 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
