Split Fiction might get a movie adaptation soon.
Hazelight Studios’ co-op multiplayer game Split Fiction is getting a movie adaptation. The game was just released earlier this month (6 March), but multiple film studios are now caught up in a bidding war to make a movie out of it. The game, which blends the genres of sci-fi and fantasy together, follows two authors who become trapped in simulated versions of the stories they have written.
Split Fiction movie rights ignite bidding war
According to Variety, Hazelight Studios now has not one, but two movie adaptations lined up for its video games. The publication states that sources from this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) privately confirmed that a media company called Story Kitchen is now packaging together writers, a cast, and a director for a movie adaptation of Split Fiction.
This package is being put together because offers from “multiple top Hollywood studios” are coming in for the Split Fiction adaptation. Hazelight itself does not appear to be involved in the creation of the adaptation at this point, having already moved onto the development of its next project. The game seems to have sold successfully enough for the developer, topping two million sales in its first week alone.
Split Fiction is far from the only project lined up for an adaptation at Hazelight, however. The studio’s previous co-op game It Takes Two has been picked up by Amazon Studios for a movie adaptation, with Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions producing, and Pat Casey and Josh Miller writing a script.
Given that the It Takes Two adaptation hasn’t been moving at a speedy pace, one can safely expect that a Split Fiction movie is still years away from happening – even if the rights do get picked up. A similar bidding war over movie rights was recently held over a Resident Evil movie adaptation, which now has Sony Pictures as a distributor and a 2026 release window.
