The collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy revealed a new mechanic on how Summons work.

Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy showed off more details on their upcoming collaboration earlier this week. The critically acclaimed JRPG franchise will be featured as a set of cards, which includes a new type of card that fully captures the power of summons in Final Fantasy. The new card type will be called Saga.

Shiva, one of Final Fantasy's most iconic summons, is confirmed to be a part of this new line of cards. Just like summons, Saga cards can only be used for a limited amount of time. They enter with a single lore counter, granting players an immediate effect. However, they will only last a few turns before disappearing, so make sure to put them to good use while you can.

Besides Saga, Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy have also brought back Double-faced card. When a double-faced card is casted and a certain condition is fulfilled, players can turn the card to reveal its second form, which has unique effects or stronger stats. Three cards have been confirmed by Wizard of the Coast to be Double-faced cards: Garland, Emer-selch, and Cecil.

The set will feature over 100 legendary creature cards, 55 of which have borderless character cards available. Every mainline game in the series is represented in the set, which boasts "the largest collection of Final Fantasy artwork ever in a single game."

The Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy collaboration will launch on 13 June, 2025.
