The game will once again be led by original director Hideki Kamiya.
A new Okami sequel is in the works with Hideki Kamiya (Devil May Cry, Bayonetta) acting as game director. The announcement was made on Friday (December 13) at The Game Awards 2024.
The game was unveiled with a stylish trailer that, while brief and lacking in actual gameplay footage, also hinted at several potential details regarding the Okami sequel. For one, the trailer retained Okami’s art style. Players might once more see the white wolf Amaterasu as the protagonist, since the trailer mostly featured a white wolf running across the forest and fields, then disappearing into the mountains before the Celestial Brush made a brief appearance on screen.
The Celestial Brush is an important element in the original game. It allows players to draw on screen and perform actions, including fighting enemies, moving objects, and fixing things—an essential feature for exploration and combat. Capcom also released an announcement for the game on its website.
“Okami is a game critically acclaimed for its unique world, heartwarming story, and exciting adventures,” the announcement read. “Now, a new adventure in the same vein as Okami has been set in motion.”
The original Okami was a single-player action-adventure game from Capcom that came out on PlayStation 2 in 2006, and was regarded as one of the best games ever made for the console, praised for its painterly art style, and fun and innovative gameplay.
The original release led to multiple ports, including a more recent HD release for the Switch. However, after Okami’s release, Kamiya left Capcom and game studio Clover eventually shut down while he founded PlatinumGames, the studio that developed popular games like Nier: Automata, Bayonetta and more.
Today, it was revealed that the Okami sequel will once again be led by Kamiya, and co-developed by several members of the former team that created the original, pulled from different studios like M-TWO Inc., Machine Head Works Inc., and CLOVERS Inc., the new studio that Kamiya is part of.
Little is known about what this Okami sequel will eventually look like. There is no official release window for the game yet, so there is much fans can look forward to finding out about the game in the future.
