GTA fans might not have to wait until 2026, as Rockstar could be lining up a surprise return to Liberty City much sooner than expected.
Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI may have been delayed to 2026, but there seems to be some good news still coming for GTA fans: the devs are preparing to release a GTA IV port for modern consoles this year, including the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and the Nintendo Switch.
The rumours first popped up on the GTA Forum from known Rockstar insider Tez2, claiming that the remaster of the open-world action game could release later in the year.
According to Tez2, someone had hinted at the GTA IV port, reportedly saying that “by now, it should’ve gone up a year in development.” This was also the alleged reason why Rockstar shut down the fan-made Liberty City Preservation Project earlier this year.
“We may end up seeing it drop later this year,” Tez2 wrote. On top of that he said that should the team continue to follow the plan “from the pandemic days” a remake of Max Payne 3 could be released after the GTA IV port is done.
“So that is an opportunity to do a bundle or a Definitive Edition. Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes, and a Max Payne 3 port," Tez2 added.
Although the information comes from a well-known Rockstar insider, none of it has been officially confirmed. What has been confirmed, however, is that Max Payne 1 and 2 are being remade by Remedy in collaboration with Rockstar Games. No release dates for either title have been announced.
GTA IV takes place in Liberty City, Rockstar’s version of New York City, and follows the criminal rise of European immigrant Niko Bellic. With GTA VI’s protagonist Lucia Caminos also said to be from Liberty City, a re-release of GTA IV ahead of GTA VI’s 2026 launch could be a fitting move.
GTA VI is currently scheduled for release on 26 May, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
