Looks like we’re not getting an Elden Ring sequel in the immediate future.
FromSoftware is not considering Elden Ring 2 as one of its next projects, according to a recent interview with game director Hidetaki Miyazaki. While speaking to Game Watch, the critically-acclaimed director of Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice noted that FromSoftware is developing multiple projects at the moment, but an Elden Ring sequel is not one of them.
That means Armored Core fans can still have hope for a new sequel, at least.
Elden Ring 2 not in the works, FromSoftware working on multiple projects
After the incredible success of Elden Ring and its expansion Shadow of the Erdtree, one might have assumed that FromSoftware was looking to turn it into a franchise – but it isn't to be. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree recently picked up a Grand Award at the PlayStation Partner Awards for achieving one of the highest worldwide sales between October 2023 and September 2024.
Following the big win, game director Hidetaka Miyazaki spoke with Game Watch regarding the studio’s future plans. When asked about future plans for Elden Ring, he said (in Japanese, machine-translated with Google) “At this point, we are not considering developments such as Elden Ring 2. However, this does not mean that we are denying the development of the IP Elden Ring.”
While the wording here is a little confusing, one thing is very clear: FromSoftware is not working on a direct sequel to Elden Ring, and isn’t planning to do so anytime soon. However, the studio seems to be open to “the development of the IP,” which means that we could see Elden Ring return in different forms. One of these is likely to be on mobile platforms, thanks to Tencent.
Miyazaki also mentioned that the game studio is working on more games right now, aside from Elden Ring. “As for ‘What will we do then?’, FromSoftware is running multiple projects as usual. Among them, there are various variations of projects, so I hope you will look forward to them.”
He also explained that these projects “are in a wide variety of genres. Some of them are directed by me, while others are handled by others, so I think we'll be able to show you a new FromSoftware in a variety of ways, so please look forward to it.”
Elden Ring 2 or not, fans of FromSoftware games can look forward to more games directed by Miyazaki – a game designer some now consider iconic, thanks to his work on renowned game franchises like Dark Souls and Armored Core. As for FromSoftware itself, its parent company Kadokawa might be in the midst of an acquisition by Sony.
