Charess is a standout figure in the cosplay community, known for her striking portrayals of popular characters from gaming and anime. With an impressive repertoire of high-energy cosplays, she brings beloved icons to life through her attention to detail and artistic flair. Her creative process, from crafting costumes to executing dynamic photoshoots, highlights her passion for storytelling and dedication to the craft.
Given her impressive portfolio as a cosplayer, it’s no surprise that CAPCOM selected Charess to embody Alma the Handler from Monster Hunter Wilds at gamescom asia 2024, a testament to her talent and versatility.
In this exclusive interview, Charess shares her thoughts on cosplaying Alma, her journey in the world of cosplay, and what fans can expect from Monster Hunter Wilds.
Q: Can you tell us who you’re cosplaying?
A: In Monster Hunter [Wilds], she is the handler. So, you will see her a lot in the game.
Q: What are some of the things your character will do in Monster Hunter Wilds?
A: Okay, so Alma will be helping the hunters and guiding them when they are hunting the monsters.
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. How long have you been cosplaying?
A: I have cosplayed for 12 years already, but that's on and off. Yeah, that's on and off though. It became a full-time work since 2021.
Q: What are some of the biggest challenges that you have faced in your cosplaying career so far?
A: I think the biggest challenge in my cosplay career is mostly cosplaying the character accurately. Because I think people already have an expectation on my work and the quality of my work. So, I feel like every now and then, I should always outdo what I did before.
Q: How do you prepare for your cosplays?
A: I do a lot of research and also I study the makeup and how they project.
Q: So, what do you like about the character you’re cosplaying now?
A: Oh, with Alma, I like her character design. I was planning to cosplay Monster Hunter before, [but] the very intricate costumes with the armour and everything. And when they [CAPCOM] asked me to cosplay Alma, I was like, oh, she’s so cute. I should really do her. She’s very cute!
Q: If you could say something to the fans who are looking forward to Monster Hunter Wolds, what would you say to them? What can they look out for?
A: Hello, guys! I know a lot of you are Monster Hunter fans. I saw a lot of people in the line. I haven't tried the game yet, but I heard from the producer that they are putting a lot of new things for Monster Hunter Wilds: new food, new challenges, and maybe new monsters. I'm going to try it later, but I'm pretty sure that it will be good.
Q: Would you recommend Monster Hunter Wilds to players?
A: Yes, I would highly recommend it!
Q: How has your experience been working with CAPCOM in gamescom asia?
A: Working with Capcom Asia is such a dream. It's my second time working with them. I worked with them before, I think two years ago for Resident Evil. […] This time for Monster Hunter, I feel so honoured and I feel so proud.
Q: How has it been, meeting and working with Monster Hunter Wilds’ producer Ryozo Tsujimoto?
A: I feel so starstruck, actually. It's rare for me to meet the people behind our favourite games. When I met him, I could really tell that he knows what he's doing. He gives a very smart game producer vibe.
Q: Would you say he's one of the most interesting people you've worked with so far?
A: Yes, super, super. I cannot even talk in front of him that much. I was so shy. I was like, oh my god, this is the legend. He's in front of me. It was more like that.
