Iran is hosting this month two of the largest online and offline competitions the country has ever seen for Dota 2, CS:GO, Fifa, Rainbow Six Siege and a few other mobile and console games.
Dota 2 and CS:GO caught Iran’s officials attention more than ever this year. Mister Mohammad-Javad Azari Jahromi, Iran’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology made an official post on his Instagram page in which he ensured the Dota 2 and CS:GO pro players that the government is tracking and working to optimize the country’s internet services so they can fully enjoy and focus on the games they love. In the same post, Mister Jahromi asked the youth society what other popular games suffer from poor internet infrastructure so the government can start looking into those as well. He also mentioned that “online gaming competitions are a golden opportunity for the country and an applicable and well-planned program is at the agenda of the work for the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.”
This month only Iran is hosting in Tehran two competitions: ILG (Iran’s computer games League), held in six disciplines with a total prize pool of 1 billion Rials (~ $30,000) and ELECOM Games, held in nine disciplines, with a total prize pool of 400,000,000 Rials (~ $12,000).
ELECOM Games is undergoing at Tehran Book Garden and for Dota 2 only the finals and the grand finals are left to be played this weekend. The winners of the online phases gathered on the 10th of September for the LAN phase. The Champions of ELECOM Games will be granted the opportunity to compete at Turkmenistan International League (AIMAG) to represent the country of Iran.
