Meanwhile, Fnatic and Imperial Esports became the first teams to be eliminated from the Opening Stage.
The second day of the Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 Opening Stage on Sunday (December 1) saw the first two teams advance to the Elimination Stage while two others became the first to be eliminated from contention.
Team Liquid and The MongolZ finished the Opening Stage with perfect 3-0 match scores after emerging victorious in the round three Advancement Matches. Meanwhile, Fnatic and Imperial Esports have bombed out in 23rd-24th place after going winless through the first three rounds of the Opening Stage.
Here's how all the action in day two of the CS2 Perfect World Shanghai Major Swiss Stage went down:
Team Liquid and The MongolZ advance to Elimination Stage
Four teams entered the second day of the Opening Stage in position to advance to the Elimination Stage after strong starts in day one: Liquid, MongolZ, GamerLegion, and FlyQuest. These four teams played in the round three Advancement Matches, with Liquid taking on FlyQuest while GamerLegion facing off against MongolZ.
FlyQuest had a promising start to their series versus Liquid, as they comfortably took a 13-5 win in Inferno. However, Liquid were quick to bounce back with a 13-9 win in Anubis before completely shutting out their opponents 13-1 in Nuke to advance to the Elimination Stage.
Meanwhile, MongolZ soundly swept GamerLegion with back-to-back stomps in Mirage (13-5) and Anubis (13-2) to also advance to the next stage of the Shanghai Major.
Fnatic and Imperial Esports bomb out of Opening Stage
Round three of the Opening Stage also saw the first set of eliminations, with Fnatic, Imperial Esports, Rare Atom, and Complexity Gaming forced to fight for their tournament lives.
Complexity made short work of Imperial, routing them in Inferno (13-4) and Ancient (13-5) to eliminate the first of four Brazilian teams from the Shanghai Major. The other Elimination Match pit Fnatic against a Rare Atom squad desperate to score a win in front of their home crowd, though many expected the more experienced albeit underperforming Fnatic to emerge victorious.
Things were looking good for Fnatic early on, as they took the series opener in Ancient with a 13-10 score. However, Rare Atom struck back with a 13-10 win in Inferno to force the match to a decider at Vertigo. Much to the delight of the Chinese crowd in attendance, Rare Atom dominated the first half, 8-4, before winning five straight rounds in the second half to boot Fnatic out of the Shanghai Major.
Meanwhile, the round three mid seed matches saw more best-of-one series as the teams that split their matches in the first two rounds battle to get some separation. BIG defeated Virtus.pro 13-11 in Vertigo, Passion UA dominated MIBR 13-5 in Mirage, FURIA Esports outlasted Wildcard Gaming 16-14 in overtime at Vertigo, while paiN Gaming trounced Cloud9 13-11 in Anubis.
With the day's results, Liquid and MongolZ claimed the first two spots in the Elimination Stage, with six more up for grabs for the remaining 12 teams in the Opening Stage. Fnatic and Imperial make their exit in a disappointing 23rd-24th place with $10,000 in consolation.
Despite their losses, FlyQuest and GamerLegion are still in a good position to make the Elimination Stage, and will be playing in the round four high seed matches against paiN and Passion UA, respectively. BIG and FURIA will also be battling it out in a third high seed match.
The round four low seed matches will then feature MIBR taking on Rare Atom, Cloud9 facing Complexity, and Virtus.pro going up against Wildcard.
The winners of the high seed matches will advance to the Shanghai Major's Elimination Stage while the losers will have one last chance to qualify in round five of the Opening Stage. Meanwhile, the winners of the low seed matches will advance to round five while the losers will be eliminated.
