With this victory, Team Vitality are now also just one ESL tournament win away from winning the ESL Grand Slam Season 5.
Team Vitality have cemented their place as the best Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) team in the world right now after they soundly swept
MOUZ , 3-0, in the grand finals of ESL Pro League Season 21 on Monday (17 March).
With their victory, Vitality claimed the grand prize of US$100,000 out of the tournament's US$400,000 prize pool and added a second trophy to their case for 2025 following their first tournament win of the year at Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Katowice 2025. This also marks Vitality's second ESL Pro League win, after their first at ESL Pro League Season 16 in August 2022.
Vitality cruise through MOUZ to win ESL Pro League Season 21
Vitality and MOUZ's clash in the ESL Pro League Season 21 had been brewing since the tournament's Swiss format Stage 2. There, MOUZ were one of the three teams bested by Vitality to qualify for the Playoffs in three rounds. MOUZ managed to bounce back from that loss and advance to the next stage in Stage 2's fourth round.
Vitality opened their Playoff campaign with a 2-0 sweep over Team Liquid in the quarterfinals while MOUZ overcame G2 Esports in three games. The semifinals then saw MOUZ pull off a shocking upset over Team Spirit to qualify for the grand finals, with Vitality overcoming a scrappy MongolZ squad to follow soon after.
While many expected Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut and
Robin “ropz” Kool to be the stars of the show for Vitality in the grand finals, every member of the team was firing on all cylinders in their sweep over MOUZ – with all Vitality players recording at least 42 frags to secure the ESL Pro League Season 21 championship.
The grand finals opened in Dust II, where Vitality made an early statement on their dominance by finishing the first half as the T side with a commanding 9-3 lead. MOUZ then showed signs of life by winning the first three rounds of the second half to get within three rounds of their opponents. Vitality managed to maintain that streak en route to claiming their first win of the series with a 13-9 score.
Shahar “flameZ” Shushan led the way for Vitality in Dust II with 21 frags and six assists on 14 deaths. Ropz,
William “mezii” Merriman, and
Dan “apEX” Madesclaire notched 14 frags and combining for 22 assists against 13, 10, and 15 deaths respectively. ZywOo also didn't need to have his usual superstar impact for Vitality to get the win, as he finished with a modest 10 frags and four assists on 15 deaths.
Map two at Nuke was the most one-sided game of the series, as a strong CT side showing by Vitality allowed them to have their second straight 9-3 first half stint. Vitality then won the first three rounds after the side switch, before MOUZ answered with their fourth round, only for the former team to secure a commanding 2-0 series lead by closing out Nuke up 13-4.
Vitality's star duo of ZywOo and ropz showed out in Nuke, notching 17 frags apiece and combining for nine assists against 11 and 13 deaths respectively. Mezii also added 16 frags and three assists on a server-best seven deaths.
Inferno ended up being the final map of the tournament, where Vitality on the T side earned their third consecutive 9-3 first half stint of the series by winning rounds 2 to 10 in one of the most dominant displays of professional CS2 ever. The second half then started with both teams trading the first three rounds, with MOUZ getting to within five rounds. However, that was as far as MOUZ could go, as Vitality methodically dismantled them in the next three rounds to secure the ESL Pro League Season 21 championship with a 13-5 win in Inferno.
ZywOo and apEX spearheaded Vitality's nigh-unstoppable assault in the closeout game by recording 16 frags apiece and combining for 16 assists on eight and 12 deaths respectively. Ropz also pitched in with 14 frags on 11 deaths.
Vitality's victories in ESL Pro League Season 21 and IEM Katowice 2025 to go with their past triumph at IEM Cologne 2024 last year also puts them in pole position for the ESL Grand Slam Season 5. Formerly known as the Intel Grand Slam, the ESL Grand Slam awards a US$1 million prize directly to the players of the team that wins four S-Tier ESL tournaments during a window of 10 consecutive events.
Vitality have five remaining chances to win the ESL Grand Slam, with their next opportunity coming at IEM Melbourne 2025 in April.
