The best controller player is back.
The VALORANT Champions Tour 2023: Americas League is starting in just a few weeks and Sentinels have officially acquired their sixth man for the first VCT franchise league. Once known as the best controller in the world, Jimmy “Marved” Nguyen has formally signed with the NA organisation to be the official sixth man for the roster.
This comes after the team had to suspend its original sixth man, Hunter "SicK" Mims after he was arrested for criminal trespassing. With SicK currently held in county jail with a $5,000 bond to his name, he will most likely not participate in the upcoming VCT Americas league.
The CEO of Sentinels, Rob Moore has also stated that the team "has and always will be committed to supporting our players through any hardships they may face, this has been no different with Hunter. Our goal is to support Hunter during this difficult moment."
With SicK now out of the roster, it has paved the way for Marved to re-enter the scene once more. the former OpTic Gaming member was part of the integral 'green wall' that took the VCT season by storm last year. With the help of Marved, OpTic won the Stage 1 Masters in Reykjavík, Iceland last year followed by a third-place finish at the Stage 2 Masters in Copenhagen, Denmark. This was followed by a grand final at the VCT Champions last September to LOUD.
Heading into the VCT Americas league, Sentinels will be looking to get their season going after a rather underwhelming VCT LOCK//IN. The team lost to the eventual winners, Fnatic in the first round of the tournament, which has since been another blotch in the organisation's recent history in the VCT. After a decent 2021 season, Sentinels failed to qualify for another LAN last year, which prompted a mass overhaul of the squad.
The VCT Americas regular season will start on April 1 to May 20 with all matches being played in a best-of-three, single round-robin format. Only the top six teams will make it through the regular season and onto playoffs, which will take place from May 23 - 28. From there, the final six teams will compete in a double-elimination bracket with all matches being played in a best-of-three format. However, the lower bracket final and the grand final will be best-of-five.
Sentinels will kick off the VCT Americas franchise league with their opening match against 100 Thieves. Another NA team that got eliminated by Fnatic at the VCT LOCK//IN, 100 Thieves were just one of three Americas teams that finished in the top eight of the first franchised tournament of the year.
