Nvidia has unveiled its refresh of the RTX 40 series GPUs, which surprisingly comes without a price hike.
Nvidia popped up at the annual tech event CES 2024 with a rather unsurprising announcement: its GeForce RTX 40-series GPUs are getting their long-rumoured mid-gen refresh. The new cards are called the RTX 40 Super series, giving the existing 40-series cards performance upgrades while going for the same or lower price.
What’s new with the RTX 40 Super series?
We have officially entered the era of Ti Super cards entering Nvidia’s lineup of GPUs. This mid-gen refresh is giving the 40-series cards a bit of an upgrade without pushing their price up any further, and two of the Super cards will be replacing their predecessors entirely. As far as performance upgrades go, the RTX 4070 Super is the biggest jump from the original 40-series, with up to 20% higher performance. More Tensor AI cores and other additions are coming to the rest of the cards to improve gameplay performance, affecting how well features like Nvidia’s DLSS (deep learning supersampling) and ray tracing work during gameplay.
Interestingly, these upgrades won’t come at a higher price. All of the Super cards are priced the same or lower than their predecessors, with the RTX 4080 Super specifically going for $200 cheaper at $999.99. The card has just a 5% increase in CUDA core count which isn’t much of an upgrade over the original, but its dramatically lower price will make it tempting to anyone who hasn’t sprung for the RTX 4080 yet all the same.
The RTX 4070 Super and RTX 4070 Ti Super are going for the same price as their predecessors: $599.99 and $799.99, respectively. The RTX 4070 Super is the lowest-end performer of this trio of new cards, but it now has a 22% increase in CUDA core count and 20W higher graphics power, which puts it closer to the RTX 4070 Ti in performance. The RTX 4070 Ti Super on the other hand, has climbed a little closer to the RTX 4070 with a higher core count and 16GB of memory.
The RTX 40 Super cards will launch one week apart this month, starting with the RTX 4070 Super on January 17. That will be followed by the RTX 4070 Ti Super on January 24, and then the RTX 4080 Super on January 31. Don’t expect any news on the RTX 50-series cards anytime soon however, as it looks like Nvidia is looking to keep the 40-series GPUs going for a little longer.
