Cloud rides a Segway, Vincent Valentine makes his debut and more minigames return in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s latest trailer.
Square Enix has dropped an eventful new trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which now has a release date of February 29, 2024. The trailer was revealed during this week’s PlayStation State of Play presentation, showing off a whole lot of familiar people and places from the original game, as well as some new stuff: is that Cloud riding a Segway?
Watch the trailer below:
If there’s one thing Square Enix refuses to do with the Final Fantasy 7 remakes, it’s to bore you. The new trailer goes over Cloud and company’s adventures in Midgar, which apparently involve not just a talking cat (to be fair, the cat appeared in the first remake too), but a Chocobo racing minigame, an encounter with Odin and flashbacks involving a younger Cloud and Zack Fair. I’m trying not to give away too much for anyone who hasn’t played the original game, but these visuals should be very, very familiar to fans.
The ninja Yuffie, who appeared in Final Fantasy 7: Intermission’s story DLC, also appears to have joined the crew as they take on the rest of Midgar in an attempt to change their fates. Sephiroth also returns, once again battling Cloud. A fan favourite character from the original game leaps forth from a coffin and asks the group, “Who dares disturb my slumber?” It looks like fans of Yuffie, Cait Sith, Vincent Valentine and Red XIII - all of whom either didn’t appear in the last game or had minimal screentime - won’t be disappointed in the sequel.
With the amount of returning locations (Gold Saucer!) and characters, it’s clear that Square Enix is intent on packing as much as it possibly can into Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which is planned to be the middle entry of a trilogy. Cloud has many more tools to explore environments that look far more open-ended than the linear corridors of the last game: he drives a Buggy, climbs mountains with chocobos, glides through the skies and Segways through streets in casual attire. Cloud on a Segway, what will they think of next?
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launches on February 29, 2024 for PlayStation 5. Final Fantasy 16 is also set to get two DLC expansions and a PC port in the near future.
