Here’s why Grand Theft Auto VI doesn’t have a release date yet.
While we don’t know Grand Theft Auto VI’s release date yet, we at least know why developer Rockstar Games and publisher Take-Two Interactive have yet to announce one. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Take-Two head Strauss Zelnick stated that the publisher wished to “maintain the anticipation and excitement” by starting marketing for the highly-anticipated game “relatively close to the release window.”
According to previous reports, the game is scheduled for a Fall 2025 launch window.
GTA VI release date and marketing will be unveiled closer to its launch
Take-Two Interactive has largely stayed mum on a release date for its upcoming open-world sequel GTA VI, currently in development at Rockstar Games. In a recent interview Take-Two head Strauss Zelnick confirmed that this was very much on purpose, as part of the publisher’s launch strategy for the game.
In the interview, Zelnick said: “The anticipation for that title may be the greatest anticipation I've ever seen for an entertainment property, and I've been around the block a few times [...] I've been in every entertainment business there is, and we want to maintain the anticipation and the excitement.
We do have competitors who will describe their release schedule for years in advance, and we found that the better thing to do is to provide marketing materials relatively close to the release window in order to create that excitement on the one hand, and balance the excitement with unmet anticipation.”
Zelnick finished, "I don't always get it exactly right, but that's what we're trying to do." Previously, Take-Two had confirmed that GTA VI was still on track to meet its Fall 2025 launch window, giving Rockstar and the publisher plenty of time to iron out marketing details in the coming months.
Recently, it was also reported that Rockstar was meeting with Roblox and Fortnite content creators to explore similar user-generated custom game modes in GTA VI’s online multiplayer mode.
