Fnatic ONIC's Goldlaner, CW, admitted that an athlete needs to have an entertaining side to succeed.
One of the best players in MPL Indonesia, the MVP of MPL ID Season 13, and Fnatic ONIC's Goldlaner, Calvin “CW” Winata, admitted that he realised as a pro player of an esports team, he needed an entertaining side to succeed.
Previously, He admitted that for the past four to five years, he didn't care about entertaining his fans or other people outside of playing well for the team. However, the last year was a revelation for him as he admitted that having an entertainment side is a good thing for him.
“I've already been in the esports Industry for four to five years; at the beginning of my career, I didn't care to entertain others (besides playing well),” CW admitted. “However, in the last year or so, I realised that to entertain is needed for a professional player.”
His fans very well documented his change as he was the centre of Fnatic ONIC's recent skit on social media where CW often being the leading actor of a skit, the end of a prank played by other players or their media team, or the one that initiated the prank itself.
His goofiness in deadpan humour often brings laughter and “cringe” to Fnatic ONIC or CW's fans. He also earnestly tried to interact with his fans more than before, as he usually replied with another deadpan joke. However, this made him a popular figure amongst Fnatic ONIC's fans as he was now branded the team's jokester.
As a professional athlete in esports, a well-documented entertaining personality was almost as crucial as their expertise in a title to have a long, great career. This thought reasoning was why some athletes fill their schedule with streaming and engaging with fans to maintain their career popularity and longevity.
CW's realisation of this was a great indication that he will likely have a long career ahead of him. More athletes also need to realise this as their careers will start dwindling on the road. A talent for entertaining people will become an excellent foundation for career transition after their playing career is over.
