The meteoric revival of RRQ Hoshi in MPL Indonesia Season 14

One of the best stories of MPL Indonesia Season 14 so far has been the resurgence of RRQ Hoshi, how did it happen?

One of the most thrilling narratives of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL) Indonesia Season 14 so far has been the complete 180 of RRQ Hoshi's performance from Season 13 to the first half of Season 14.

The King of Kings currently sit at the top of the leaderboard with seven wins and one loss after the first four weeks of Regular Season play. But by that point back in the MPL Indonesia Season 13, RRQ Hoshi was at rock bottom with just three wins in eight matches.

This complete turnover was a sight to behold, especially for the millions of RRQ Hoshi's fans. So, how did it happen? What made them rejuvenate their performance in Season 14? Here's our breakdown.

No more language barriers

The first and most glaring difference between the RRQ Hoshi squads in Season 13 and 14 was that all foreign team members have left the team, with John “Irrad” Abarquez joining RSG Philippines, Borris James “Brusko” Parro going to Fnatic ONIC Philippines, Zaya "Sayargyi" Paing returning to Myanmar to join Mythic Seal, and Vrendon "Vrendon Lin" Pesebre joining Team Spirit as an analyst.

This change meant there are now no more language barriers inside the team and communication has been much clearer than last season. With all their personnel being from Indonesia again, RRQ Hoshi looked much more agile and precise in executing strategies in Season 14, at least for the first half of the season. While there's much that can still be said about how foreign talent can enrich any squad, RRQ Hoshi's turnaround so far has proven that a homogenous roster is still effective.

A trimmed-down yet efficient squad

One other change in the squad was the number of registered players. In Season 13, RRQ Hoshi registered eleven players in the team. Ten of them at least played one game in the regular season. While an extensive roster can produce versatility in strategies, it could also create instability inside the team, a trait often seen from the King of Kings last season.

Contrary to the previous season, RRQ Hoshi only registered six players for Season 14 with Hazle as the deputy for Sutsujin. This trimmed-down version of the squad ensured all the players wouldn't get substituted besides Sutsujin, no matter how they performed. However, seeing how the team's jungler has performed so far, it seems like he wouldn't be getting substituted for a while.

The rise of Edith and Assassin Jungle

Due to her versatility, Edith grew considerably in popularity during the Mid-Season Cup 2024. That trend carried to MPL Indonesia Season 14, where she was the most popular tank hero in the league. Her pick/ban rate was 72%, appearing 55 times across all matches in the first half of the season.

In Season 13, Edith was only picked sixteen times across all league stages. This was because of her versatility and the game's lack of definitive counters.

RRQ picked her in ten games and won nine of those in Season 14 so far. This showed that Said Ali “idok” Ridho and Dyrennn were masters of this hero, adding Edith to their potential signature hero picks. Moreover, depending on the enemy lineup, they could switch whoever took her to the field.

Meanwhile, Assassins became popular again in the jungle after the recent buff while the tank was weakening. Teams in MPL ID Season 14 have regularly picked Nolan, Julian, Alpha, Ling, and Hayabusa, while Baxia were nowhere to be found.

Sutsujin didn't shine bright in the previous two seasons because Tank Jungle was the meta, while his forte was Assassins. However, the former EVOS Glory Jungle was the in-form jungler at the moment, and he was more freely picking Assassins Jungle. Funnily, he was the only person picking Freddrinn despite his nerf and winning with him.

Combine that with Schevenko David “Skylar” Tendean in Gold Lane's solidity, and you have the recipe for success—at least for half a season.

All three were the main factors why RRQ Hoshi dominated the MPL Indonesia Season 14 and became the half-season champion. However, it remains to be seen whether they can carry this momentum until the end of the season.
