MLBB Women's Invitational 2024: Gaimin Gladiators, the rising contenders from Malaysia

Gaimin Gladiators’ newly-minted women's MLBB squad is ready to prove themselves at MWI 2024.

The women's Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) esports scene is set to take the spotlight in the upcoming MLBB Women’s Invitational (MWI) 2024 in late July. As part of the Esports World Cup, 12 of the best women's MLBB teams from all across the world will be battling it out in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for the right to claim the title of strongest in the world as well as the grand prize of $180,000 out of a $500,000 prize pool.

GG HomeGirls will be among the 12 championship hopefuls in this year’s MWI as the representatives of Malaysia, one of the biggest hubs of MLBB in the world.

Malaysia’s gladiatrices arise

Gaimin Gladiators will be among the teams making their international tournament debut at MWI 2024, seeking to cement their place as a contender in the women's MLBB esports scene.

The team was originally known as ‘HomeGirls’, the women's division of the Malaysian organisation ‘HomeBois’ that was established in 2020. HomeBois has since grown to become one of the top teams in the MLBB Professional League (MPL) Malaysia. In the MLBB women's scene, HomeGirls are poised to match their counterparts and more.

In the MWI 2024 regional qualifier for Malaysia and Singapore back in June, the HomeGirls squad put on a dominant performance to punch their tickets to Riyadh. The team scored 3-0 sweeps in three consecutive best-of-five matches to earn the privilege to represent their region in MWI 2024.

HomeGirls’ impressive run to qualify for MWI 2024 then caught the eye of one of the top esports organisations in the world: Gaimin Gladiators. Less than a week after their victory in the qualifier, HomeGirls announced that they have partnered with Gaimin Gladiators and will be competing in MWI 2024 under the latter’s banner.

To earn a partnership with Gaimin Gladiators is no mean feat. The Canadian organisation gained renown in 2023 for their flagship Dota 2 team, which won all three Majors that year and finished second in The International 2024.

Eager to achieve more success in other titles this year, Gaimin Gladiators entered the MLBB scene in February by signing North American squad TheOhioBrothers. And with their partnership with HomeGirls, Gaimin Gladiators will be looking for more victories in the women's MLBB esports scene.

Entering the arena

The Gaimin Gladiators roster competing in MWI 2024 is a mix of both veterans and relative newcomers to the women's MLBB esports scene.

Gold laner Nurul Effa Fauzana “Fafau” Binti Mohd Fauzi and mid laner Hanis Wahidah “Hanie” Binti Mohamad Dashuki previously represented Malaysia in the Women’s MLBB tournament for the 2023 SEA Games, where they finished third. EXP laner Ashley “Asheee” Im Ai Syn and jungler Queenie “Qu1nn” Lim Mae Shen have also tasted success locally by winning the KBS MyLadies and MDEC MLBB Ladies’ championships.

Meanwhile, roamer Chloe "Qiiboyyy" Chong “Qiiboyyy” Mei Kei and substitute Qurratul Ain Nurfarisha “Shaa” Bt Mohd Nizam listed their team’s victory at the MWI 2024 qualifier as the biggest achievement of their respective careers so far.

Gaimin Gladiators are also being reinforced by support staff with experience competing in MPL MY in the form of coach Muhammad Nabil "Abey" Bin Japri and analyst Muhammad Farhan "Sorapayung" Bin Ibrahim.

Make no mistake, there's a lot of proven talent and potential breakout stars in this team. More than just providing a proving ground for these players, MWI 2024 could also be where Gaimin Gladiators' roster starts realising their promise.

Forged in the fires of one of the most competitive regions in MLBB’s heartland of Southeast Asia, Gaimin Gladiators should be considered a contender in MWI 2024. While regional rivals like the Philippines’ Smart Omega Empress and Indonesia’s Team Vitality are sure to be formidable foes, teams in the MWI would also do well to be wary of Gaimin Gladiators.

Gaimin Gladiators’ opponents should be especially wary of Fafau, the team’s star gold laner. She arguably personifies her team’s playstyle and spirit, unafraid to take risks and exploit openings presented by their opponents in their relentless pursuit of victory.

With Claude, Harith, and Moskov listed as her signature heroes, Fafau presents a formidable target for opponents that must be shut down early. Fail to do so and she will start snowballing – a victory for Gaimin Gladiators is very likely to follow after. But even if she gets slowed down, the focus that Fafau demands from opponents also leaves space for her teammates to make plays for themselves.

Fafau may be the tip of the spear for Gaimin Gladiators, but opponents would be foolish to think that there will be no swords waiting for them once they get past her.

Gaimin Gladiators will be starting MWI 2024's Group Stage in Group D alongside Indonesia's Team Vitality and China's TLG. With two spots in the Playoffs available in the group, Gaimin Gladiators are in a good position to make a deep run in the tournament.

Of course, they wouldn't be satisfied with earning just the second seed in their group. Vitality is expected to be one of the strongest contenders in MWI, a team Gaimin Gladiators are likely going to face if they hope to raise the trophy. Should Gaimin Gladiators score an early victory over Vitality in the Group Stage, then the momentum from that just might carry them to the championship.

The upcoming battles are sure to be hard-fought, but since when have gladiatrices shied away from a fight?
