Big changes are coming in 2024.
Worlds 2023 is officially over and Riot Games has brought even more news to tide everyone over during the off-season with a look at what to expect next year. The Season Start 2024 gameplay changes are now available in the Public Beta Environment (PBE) as Riot brought forth plenty of updates to the current surroundings of the Summoner's Rift.
This includes a major change to the Baron pit, which will now feature brand-new residents. Speaking of which, these new tenants will now have a lasting influence on the Rift that has affected the Rift herald as well as Baron Nashor itself, who will have three new forms as well. This also brought about changes to the terrain surrounding his pit, which will change according to the form.
There are also plenty of item changes coming to 2024 as Riot look to de-mythic the item system. Scroll on down to check out all the changes.
Gameplay Changes
Void Changes
Voidgrubs will replace the first Rift Herald of each game before despawning at 14 minutes. This is to make way for the Rift Herald. Three Voidgrubs will spawn at 5 minutes, each with its own respawn timer of 4 minutes, and a maximum of six can spawn in a single game.
When aggro-ed, each Voidgrub will unleash a swarm of Voidmites to attack their enemies. Should you manage to take down some Voidgrubs, your entire team will earn the Hunger of the Void buff that will give the user damage over time and bonus damage to structures. This buff stacks based on the amount of Voidgrubs you manage to take down. When you manage to take down five or six, you’ll also periodically summon 1 or 2 Voidmites respectively to help you take down structures.
Rift Herald
Because of the emergence of the Voidgrubs, the Rift Herald will also have a brand new, Voidgrub-inspired look. But there's more to it than just a new skin for the Rift Herald. When you crush the Eye of the Herald, it will spawn as usual but with an added twist. You or an ally champion can now right-click to jump onto the Herald. This will now allow you to ride and steer the Herald, much like Sion's ultimate.
If you charge the Herald into a turret, it will do more damage than if it's charged into one uncontrolled. If you run into an enemy champion, they will take damage and be knocked airborne, which could open up opportunities for ganks and pushes. Once you collide with the terrain or a turret, the champion that is riding the Herald will be knocked off, going back to their usual selves.
Void Camps
Void will be the main focus of 2024 as its presence is expanded across the map. This will also include the Blue Sentinel, the Red Brambleback, and the Rift Scuttler, all of whom will be getting a makeover with a void-inspired look. When the Baron Nashor emerges after 20 minutes, the next Blue Sentinel and Red Brambleback respawn will rise again as the Voidborn Sentinel and Voidborn Brambleback respectively.
The transformation will come with increased durability but it also comes with a better incentive now — once slain, Blue and Red will grant their buffs to the entire team of the player that takes them down (excluding any allies that were dead). As for the Rift Scuttler, its next respawn after 20 minutes will be the Voidborn Scuttler. Once it's slain again, it will send out a massive Scryer’s Bloom effect, revealing all champions and wards in a large surrounding area. Similar to Scryer’s, all wards revealed this way will be reduced to 1 HP.
Baron Nashor
Much like the Rift Herald visual changes, Baron will also be getting a Void-inspired look along with three, brand-new forms to go with it. The Hunting Baron leaves the pit unchanged; the Territorial Baron creates a wall in front of the pit, and the All-Seeing Baron closes off the front and opens up both sides creating a tunnel. This will now open up a lot more possibilities for different team fight mechanics around the Baron's pit.
And with each new form, Baron also gets different attacks for each variation. The Hunting Baron will blast all nearby enemies with lightning called down from above. The Territorial Baron can pull champions closer to it while the All-Seeing Baron opens a Void Rift that creates a damage-over-time zone within the new tunnel pit.
Terrain Changes
All three lanes as well as the jungle have had some major rework done to allow for greater creativity when it comes to ganks as well as providing more coverage for both mid-laners and junglers.
Top Lane
There are two major changes to the top lane with the first being a terrain that is now somewhat mirrored from the blue to red side. This will make gank paths more similar whilst also making the lane trickier to gank. The second major change would be the new little wall and brush combination in the middle of the river entrance.
Jungle
A new and wide wall is the name of the game change for the jungle, which sits directly across from the Baron and Drake pits. These should help create some safety for junglers on their own half of the map and equalise midlaners’ options to roam towards both top and bottom.
Mid-Lane
The mid-lane will now have more space as the brush is pushed back a bit and one gank path is moved further back. This should help create some more safety for immobile mid-lane mages, so players feel a little better when picking these types of champs.
Bot Lane
Much like the top lane, the bot lane's first change is similar with a small wall and pixel brush added right beside it. However, the only major change is for the red side as it will now mirror the blue side's tri-brush area. This will open up a new gank path beside the turret to ensure both sides are more symmetrical to eliminate side-based advantages when it comes to gank protection and warding.
Infernal Drake Changes
Given the new terrain changes that have been introduced, the Infernal Drakes have also been adjusted to accommodate with the new walls, or lack thereof. This includes moving a few small walls and brushes for Mountain and Ocean Drake. Now, once the Infernal Rift is locked in, Infernal Cinders will spawn around the map.
Each cinder will give the champion that picked it up adaptive stats beneficial to your champion and a burst of movement speed. Upon death, champions will drop half of their cinders which can then be picked up by an enemy or allied champion.
New Item — Thematic Vote Results
Last month saw the introduction of a new tank support item, Go Fast with Friends that speeds up allies who follow you into battle. With the votes now tallied for a new thematic item, it has been decided that Trailblazer will be the new item of choice as it won 35 per cent of the vote while Eerie Invitation got 34 per cent and Scout's Fanfare got 31 per cent.

Item Changes
One of the biggest changes that will be coming to items in 2024 is the removal of both the Stopwatch and the Perfect Timing rune, which will have massive implications in the future when team fights are going down to the wire. Another major goal for the item changes was to shift the power from items into the champions themselves and to give players more flexibility with their build paths.

Fist Bumps
For a video game company that has a fist bump as its logo, it sure took its own sweet time to finally implement a fist bump feature into the game. Nevertheless, it is finally here as Riot has introduced an interactive fist bump for League of Legends. All you need to do is activate the emote and wait for another team member to use the emote to cue the new effect.
