Counter Logic Gaming will reportedly come to a close amidst mass layoffs within the organisation

More uncertainty in the LCS.

It has been reported that Counter Logic Gaming will close up shop for good in the near future with the esports organisation expected to have mass layoffs in the coming week. The news was first broken by League of Legends reporter, Travis Gafford who shared the breaking news on his YouTube channel.

Employees within the organisation were first told about the news at the start of the week that they would be let go by Saturday. Some were also told that they could be let off as early as Thursday. CLG's parent company, The Madison Square Garden Company is also supposedly looking to sell off its League of Legends roster and completely dissolve its esports arm.

However, the sale of the team will not happen immediately. CLG will reportedly still keep its 2023 LoL team for the time being and prepare for the LCS Summer Split. Although, a sale for the org's franchise slot in the LCS is currently in the works. CLG has been in the LCS since its inception, which dates back to 2013.

According to Gafford in the same video, it has also been reported that NRG Esports will be looking to buy over CLG's franchise slot in the LCS. The LA-based esports org looks to be the favourite to take over the current CLG roster as of now. NRG last competed in the LCS during the 2016 season. It also currently retains a franchise slot in the VCT Americas of Riot Games' VALORANT league.

Gafford has also gone on to say that it remains unclear if NRG will just be acquiring the LCS squad or the entire organisation. However, the decision to sell and close the company is down to the parent organisation, The Madison Square Garden Company.

This news comes just days after another long-time LCS organisation, TSM was reportedly going to sell its LCS slot while also looking to move out of esports entirely. Both CLG and TSM are two of the longest-standing North American esports organisations within League of Legends, having competed in every single split of the LCS pre-franchised as well as in its current format.
