League of Legends' first-ever Worlds MVP Shushei has died

Shushei, LoL esports' first-ever Worlds MVP, lost the battle to cancer.

It’s a sad day for the League of Legends (LoL) community as it lost one of its’ pioneering legends to cancer. Maciej “Shushei” Ratuszniak, who won the first-ever LoL world championship and Worlds MVP award with Fnatic, has passed away after a battle with cancer. He was 36-years old.

Shushei's passing was announced to the public by FNATIC, with the organisation's official X account also changing its cover photo and profile picture into Shushei’s Worlds Gragas skin to commemorate the late champion.

Shushei was a core part of the Fnatic squad that claimed the inaugural LoL World Championship title in the Riot Season 1 Championship in 2011. He competed alongside Enrique “xPeke” Cedeño Martínez, Lauri “Cyanide” Happonen, Manuel “LaMiaZeaLoT” Mildenberger, Peter “Mellisan” Meisrimel, and emergency substitute Bram “wewillfailer” de Winter, who stepped in during the early stages of the tournament when xPeke was delayed due to a missed flight.

Not only did he help Fnatic win the inaugural edition of one of esports’ most prestigious tournaments, but his outstanding Gragas play also earned him the title of the first-ever LoL Worlds MVP. That wasn’t his only achievement—Shushei also won Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Season 6 in New York with Fnatic, as well as IEM Hanover 2011 with myRevenge.

Following his Worlds triumph, Shushei was granted the honour of selecting a champion to receive a commemorative skin. He naturally chose his iconic Gragas, and the Fnatic Gragas skin remains available in the game to this day, ensuring his legacy lives on.

He was also one of the first players to use Vi in competitive play, as well as AP Evelynn. Known early in his career for his Gragas and Alistar, he helped popularise both champions as AP Carries.

After a win in the LoL Championship Series (LCS) Warsaw qualifiers, Shushei famously chest-bumped his teammate Hosan, accidentally causing him to fall. He was later inducted into Fnatic's Hall of Fame.

Before his storied career in LoL esports, Shushei was a high-ranking player in Heroes of Newerth, and prior to that, played World of Warcraft as a Death Knight. During the Wrath of the Lich King era, his guild awarded him a legendary axe.

LEC community mourns the loss of a legend

Many other personalities in the League community took to X (formerly Twitter) to pay respects and offer condolences. These included LoL European Championship (LEC) host Eefje “Sjokz” Depoortere who said, “Rest in peace Shushei… one of the first greats of our game. Way too young to go… no words.”

Former Fnatic and current RuddySack coach Jakob “YamatoCannon” Mebdi also paid respects, saying, “RIP legend. I will never forget the memories we share.”

LEC host Laure "Bulii" Valée also sent her condolences through social media saying, “What a terrible news :( one of the first great names in the game.”

LEC’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, and many other teams within different Leagues like G2 Esports,Heretics, GiantX, SK Gaming,  and more, also shared their condolences by replying to FNATIC’s post.
