We see some interesting trends emerge in the first week of GPL that differentiate it from both NA and EU LCS, including a dominant use of Gragas. If you're interested in further comparisons, please check out the latest EU and NA Stats features.
KDA & Farm Awards
Unsurprisingly, given their strong performances against the Titans and the Snipers this week, ahq e-Sports Club's GarentDevil and GreenTea lead GPL in kills and assists. 26 kills and 41 assists are monstrous for having only played two games, and if you missed them, they're definitely worth watching—if for nothing else than the appearance of support Malphite.
After losing two games in a row, it may surprise few that one of Imperium Pro Team's players leads GPL in most deaths. The jungler, Rebnegga, struggled to influence flagging lanes, but only ended up leading the GPL death toll at 15. Meanwhile, despite losing a game this week, Taipei Snipers' OhReal has demonstrated his adaptation to his mid lane role in one of the most important ways: by farming. He managed to pick up a 365.5 cs average in the two games TPS played.
After watching SAJ's QTV push an inhibitor against the Bangkok Titans within ten minutes, it will surprise few to see him here. Not only did he fail to die and pick up six kills and eight assists as one of Vietnam's breakout bruiser Gragases against the Manila Eagles, but he also performed well on Lee Sin against the Bangkok Titans, yielding an overall KDA of 11.5. QTV, however, wasn't the only member of the Jokers to standout. His synergy with jungler Safety was key to the team's victories, and we expect this combination to take the team to the top this season. For now, Safety has a KDA of 6.4.
While the Jokers' showing was impressive, few can help but gawp at the numbers boasted by ahq e-Sports Club's carries. Though ahq also faced Bangkok Titans, many would argue that their other opponent, the Taipei Snipers, are a significantly more difficult foe than the Sentinels, making westdoor's 13.7 KDA ratio and GarnetDevil's daunting 22.5 all the more impressive.
Despite GarnetDevil's pickup, however, GreenTea doesn't lead support players with the highest KDA ratio, having died significantly more than fellow Thresh player, SwordArt, who boasts a rate of 5.6 kills or assists per death despite his team's one loss to the Taipei Assassins.
Team KDA
Despite overwhelmingly large numbers on the carries of ahq e-Sport Club, they remain a full point behind the Saigon Jokers in team KDA, who lead GPL at 7.63. This is likely due to the longer games ahq e-Sports Club played, resulting in more deaths, but also more kills and assists, as they boast 60 and 138, respectively.
Though Rebnegga holds the record for most individual deaths in Week 1, Bangkok Titans as a team have the most deaths overall at 55, though both teams from the Philippines are just behind at 51 and 52 deaths each.
Most Contested
As with the LCS, both Kassadin and Elise are top contested champions, but they're nearly trumped in popularity by Gragas and Thresh. For GPL Winter, Gragas was a very dominant mid lane pick, and with the advent of top lane bruiser Gragases brought to GPL Spring by Vietnamese teams, his popularity can only increase. GPL also hosts an array of accomplished Thresh players. Junie, Jay, or GreenTea can easily win games for their team on a Thresh pick alone.
Sivir, Jinx, and Lucian lead in picks and bans for AD carries, with almost no mention of a Caitlyn. She was played once this week by NL. Caitlyn isn't the only surprisingly unpopular bottom lane pick. Annie just barely appeared on our list of top contested champions with only three picks in ten games.
Perhaps the most peculiar numbers belong to Yasuo and Dr. Mundo, however. While these champions were banned seven and six times each, they were never picked.
