Destiny 2 maker Bungie reveals upcoming PvP extraction shooter Marathon

Bungie is finally ready to talk about its upcoming PvP shooter Marathon.

Destiny 2 maker Bungie has finally revealed more details for its upcoming PvP extraction shooter Marathon, which serves as a revival of its long-dormant IP of the same name. Bungie held a big gameplay reveal showcase for Marathon over the weekend, explaining how the game works and announcing its release date: 23 September, 2025. A closed alpha test for the game will also begin on 23 April, 2025.

Here’s a gameplay overview for Marathon:

Everything you need to know about Marathon

Bungie is following up its success with the Destiny franchise with a revival of its long-dormant Marathon IP. The gameplay overview trailer explains how Marathon (2025) works:

“Marathon is a team-based extraction shooter set around the mysterious and cutthroat world of Tau Ceti IV. You are a Runner, a cybernetic mercenary who's given up their human form for a biosynethic shell with unique abilities and stats, capable of both tactical and fast-paced combat. Here, you'll fight in a crew of up to three players across a variety of zones and points of interest. You'll face rival Runners in zones of up to 18 players, countless security forces, and otherworldly threats. To scavenge the remains of a lost colony for glory and fortune.”

Six playable classes will be available at launch, but only four were revealed during this gameplay showcase: Void, Glitch, Locus, and Blackbird. These four classes will be available during the game’s alpha test, with the other two likely to be announced closer to its full release. The game emphasises teamplay with pinging mechanics and team objectives, but players will also be able to strike out as a solo Runner if they wish.

Otherwise, Marathon works as a pretty standard shooter: players start by building their loadout and choosing a runner. Once they’re in the map, they’re tasked with ticking off objectives, gathering as much loot as they can, and getting out of the map alive. If they’re killed by other players, all of their loot will be up for grabs. If they make it out with all their loot intact, they can use their new gear for future runs.

Bungie claims that no two matches will be the same in Marathon, thanks to its variable weather system, dynamic events, and plentiful secrets tucked away in the map. The game will also receive seasonal updates, keeping things fresh over time.

Marathon will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on 23 September, 2025.
