Nintendo America president addresses Nintendo Switch 2 game price complaints

Doug Bowser, president of Nintendo America, said that Nintendo Switch 2 game prices are determined individually.

Nintendo of America president, Doug Bowser explained that Nintendo is adopting a variable pricing approach for Nintendo Switch 2 game prices. Speaking to The Washington Post, Doug Bowser explained that each game’s pricing is determined individually, ensuring that titles with extensive content and longevity are priced accordingly.

This explains why Mario Kart World will be priced at US$79.99, even higher than the most expensive Nintendo Switch game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of Kingdom (US$69.99). Variable pricing also means that other game prices might differ from Mario Kart World. Some titles may exceed traditional price points, while others could remain more affordable.

"What you see right there is variable pricing," Bowser told The Washington Post. “We’ll look at each game, really look at the development that’s gone into the game, the breadth and depth of the gameplay, if you will, the durability over time and the repeatability of gameplay experiences.”

It's worth noting that Mario Kart World can be bought at a significant discount in a bundle with a Nintendo Switch 2. With the bundle, consumers can get the hardware with the game for US$499.99.

Nintendo is actively assessing the new tariffs

Doug Bowser has also clarified that U.S. tariffs were not factored into the initial pricing of the Switch 2. However, with new tariffs imposed on Japanese exports, Nintendo is currently actively assessing their potential impact on future pricing. This uncertainty has led to a delay in U.S. pre-orders, as the company evaluates how these tariffs might affect production and distribution costs.

Nintendo has officially unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2, which will launch on June 5, 2025 with a starting price of $449.99. While the pre-order delay has been announced, whether or not it will release at a higher price in the US remains to be seen. Uncertainty surrounding tariffs could lead to price adjustments in the future.
