Warner Bros. Pictures has released more details for Mortal Kombat 2, the live-action movie sequel that finally takes on the titular tournament. Characters who appear to have died in the last movie – including Kano and Liu Kang – are also confirmed to return in one form or another. According to Mortal Kombat game director Ed Boon, “We've killed a number of characters who are in Mortal Kombat 1 and our latest games. So we deal with spirits and the NetherRealm and things like that. There are ways to bring dead characters back."

Besides returning characters, however, the sequel plans to throw in many characters who arguably should’ve been there since day one. Karl Urban stars as Johnny Cage, the washed-up Hollywood actor who has long been a fan-favourite of the game franchise. Adeline Rudolph will play Princess Kitana, while Tati Gabrielle (Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet) will play her bodyguard Jade.

Both of these characters are closely tied to a primary antagonist of the game franchise: Shao Kahn, which means, of course, that he’s making his debut here too. In fact, multiple baddies are set to appear in this film, including Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), Shang Tsung (Chin Han), and Quan Chi (Damon Harriman).

In Mortal Kombat 2, these characters will have to duke it out in an all-new tournament between Earthrealm and Outworld. If Earthrealm loses this one, Shao Kahn will be all set to invade Earth and take over its populace. According to Boon, "They keep score throughout the movie. There's a visual representation of who is winning… It's not just a tournament for the sake of a tournament. There are huge consequences, so you really are keeping score. And there are a lot of twists in it that keep you on your toes."
