Capcom is aiming to invigorate the game industry with its first ever game development competition.

In an official press release, game publishing titan Capcom has announced that it is hosting its first ever game development competition utilising the company’s proprietary RE Engine.

Titled the ‘Capcom Games Competition’, this will be the company’s first foray into competitive game development events for students in Japan, with the ultimate goal of “strengthening the game industry.”

RE Engine, also known as Reach for the Moon Engine, is Capcom's proprietary game development engine, primarily used in the production of Capcom’s celebrated lineup of recent Resident Evil games. The engine aids in facilitating a smooth development environment by “simplifying complex technologies and making them manageable for developers,” as well as allowing for lifelike, photorealistic visuals. The RE Engine has been in continuous development since its creation in 2014 for Resident Evil 7.

In the Capcom Games Competition, teams of up to 20 students will be able to create games utilising RE Engine in a cloud environment, while also receiving support from professional Capcom developers and assigning roles to each other according to real-life game creator jobs. Their alloted time for game development will span a half-year period.

Additionally, Capcom plans to offer game production support, and an opportunity for commercialization for future award winners.

Through the Capcom Games Competition, the company is hoping to strengthen the video game industry overall by contributing to the development of research in educational organisations, and offering opportunities to learn about game development and its processes to outstanding talents.

The competition is open to all students within Japan who are at least 18 years old and enrolled in a university, graduate school, or vocational school. Applications have already begun as of December 9, and will continue until January 17, 2025. For more information regarding this event, check out the official Capcom Games Competition website.
