Tencent's latest globally launched MOBA Honor of Kings has won the 2024 best game award from Google Play in Southeast Asia. The award was given to the MOBA because of its collaboration and gameplay.
According to Google Play, “collaboration was vital in the MOBA, which soaked up its attention this year, allowing it to grab the top crown as their Best Game of 2024” in its Southeast Asia market. Google Play also noted that it suited both casual and competitive players by adapting a fast-paced take on the signature MOBA formula of 5v5 battles using a diverse roster of heroes while also featuring different game modes.
The company further reiterated that Honor of Kings was made to be accessible to MOBA beginners, but that doesn't mean it's a cakewalk. The necessity to optimise your hero's role within the team and its assigned lane provides a compelling challenge in every round.
In a press release sent out by Tencent, Dean Huang, Director of Honor of Kings, commented:
We are incredibly grateful to Google Play for the award and to the passionate community across Southeast Asia that has embraced Honor of Kings since its launch and made it one of the most popular games in the region.
Tencent also stated that since its global launch, Honor of Kings has been downloaded by over 50 million players, and has provided extensive localisation for its international players, which includes providing guides, resources, and tips across its official platforms to educate players.
In addition to international IP content, the game has developed new heroes and in-game activities that were regionally or locally curated with its community in mind. This included the Lee Chong Wei campaign in Malaysia, which featured the Malaysian professional sports athlete, and the Silat-themed skin, which marked the first time traditional martial art was featured in a mobile game.
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Honor of Kings' biggest rival in the mobile MOBA market, also received the best ongoing game award for Southeast Asia.
Meanwhile, Google Play's game awards for the United States awarded AFK Journey with its best game award. Finnish mobile game developer Supercell also won two categories in total, as Clash of Clans won the Best Multi-device Game of 2024 while Squad Busters won the Best Multiplayer Game of 2024.
