Everything you need to know about Helldivers 2’s biggest update yet
Helldivers 2 is launching its biggest update yet on August 6, titled Escalation of Freedom. Developer Arrowhead Studios went into detail on the upcoming update in a PlayStation Blog post, starting with a new difficulty level. Combat Rating 10: Super Helldive will be the most challenging difficulty level by far, giving players even better rewards if they survive the experience.
Arrowhead is also adding more mission variation to the game with this new update, in the form of new mission objectives and bigger enemy outposts. These outposts offer all-new Super Sample rewards, but are heavily fortified and will require players to work together to take them out. According to the developer, “many of our new mission objectives,” will be playable on other difficulty levels, but some will be locked to Super Helldive.
The Escalation of Freedom update is also adding a few new enemies to Helldivers 2, starting with the Impaler from the original Helldivers. This giant creature will be difficult to deal with, but it’s not alone. The Spore Charger also joins the Terminid ranks, with the ability to obscure its location until it sneaks up on unlucky Helldivers. A supercharged Brood Commander called the Terminid Alpha Commander is also on the way.
Arrowhead’s blog post teases that the Rocket Tank is coming to the ranks of the Automatons, but there will be more, “bot surprises,” coming in the future. The swamps are also getting a spooky makeover, with rolling fog and blackened trees now limiting player visibility.
The Escalation of Freedom update is also adding a much-needed fix to the game’s grief kicking woes. Currently, players can be grief kicked for little to no reason right before extraction and lose out on good loot because of it. The update will soon allow kicked players to spawn into a new session with all of the team’s loot from their previous session, allowing them to pick up whatever they want before extraction. The squad doing the kicking will have their loot remain unchanged.
Arrowhead teases that the update will have, “a ton of surprises to discover,” so the developer likely has a lot more up its sleeves. Helldivers 2: Escalation of Freedom launches on August 6.
