Will this movie have anything to do with Alien Isolation?

20th Century Studios has released a trailer for Alien: Romulus, a movie that appears to be taking the Alien franchise back to its roots in classic sci-fi horror. This trailer shows off more Facehuggers, Chestbursters and Xenomorphs from the upcoming movie, all of which assault a group of young space colonisers who had the misfortune of investigating an abandoned space station.

Alien: Romulus reveals new Xenomorph in first official trailer

20th Century Studios has released its first official trailer for Alien: Romulus, and it looks a lot like Alien (1979) so far. The trailer briefly introduces viewers to its main cast of characters: a group of young space colonisers who appear to be trespassing on a derelict space station in order to secure a better life for themselves. Instead, they come face to face with unimaginable horrors, starting with Facehuggers and Chestbursters, and ending with the iconic Xenomorph itself.

Alien: Romulus’ claustrophobic setting lends itself well to a series of nightmarish encounters for these characters, such as Facehuggers hiding in flooded laboratories and headless androids hunting people down. We don’t get much detail on the main plot, aside from the fact that a Xenomorph is eventually going to hunt these characters down - if they survive the rest of the ship’s dangers, that is.

Interestingly, Alien: Romulus takes place between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) on the official franchise timeline, the same as the 2014 horror survival game Alien: Isolation. An early photo taken on the movie’s set also revealed a save station from the game, which suggests that we’ll see both titles tie into one another in other ways.

Director Fede Alvarez recently confirmed that the game inspired him to make this movie in the first place, saying, “I played ‘Alien: Isolation’ and it's what made me want to make this movie. I played 10 years ago. I was playing the game and I think we felt like ALIEN wasn’t that scary anymore. In playing the game and being terrified, I was like, ‘this can be actually terrifying’, and that’s when my mind started going like, oh man, someone give me a chance to make this movie [...]”

Alien: Romulus stars Cailee Spaeny (Civil War), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Archie Renaux and more. The movie hits theaters on August 16, 2024.
