The FIFA football game franchise appears to be moving from EA to 2K.
According to recent leaks, 2K Games has secured the official FIFA games licence and is now in charge of developing a new series of football games. Retailer MohPlay Inc first leaked that, “The partnership is confirmed, and 2K will be developing a new football game series,” on Twitter/X, lining up with earlier rumours that suggest 2K was making a FIFA game.
Electronic Arts and FIFA split up to make football games separately in 2022, after which the former publisher started the EA Sports FC series while FIFA licensed out it's brand for smaller football games. If these leaks are true, however, 2K is now in charge of making FIFA games for the foreseeable future.
FIFA 2K25 rumoured to launch this year
Insider Gaming suggested earlier this year that 2K and FIFA were in talks to develop a new football game franchise together, and a new leak from retailer MohPlay Inc has added fuel to the fire this week. The retailer claims that 2K is developing, “a new football game series," taking over the FIFA game franchise from EA. EA, meanwhile, will continue to make annual releases for its EA Sports FC franchise.
EA dropped the FIFA game franchise after negotiations fell through between both parties, leaving FIFA to license out its own brand to other developers for smaller titles. It looks like the company is trying to get back to its glory days of annual FIFA games now, however, and thinks 2K is the right publisher to make that happen.
The leaker claims that “FIFA 2K25 is set to launch this year, just in time for the FIFA World Cup 2K26!” which means that fans shouldn’t have to wait long for an official announcement to come from 2K about the game. Summer Game Fest will kick off in June, delivering previews and first looks at a bevy of upcoming games, and FIFA 2K25 could very well be one of them.
EA Sports FC 25 is also expected to launch sometime in September this year, giving football game fans two solid options to pick from. Three, if you count Konami’s eFootball franchise as well.
