God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Gravity Rush and Patapon adaptations are all in the works.
Sony Interactive Entertainment came to CES 2024 with an update on its upcoming live-action adaptations for God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn. The company confirmed that writing is already underway for Amazon Prime Video’s God of War series and Netflix’s Horizon Zero Dawn series, and provided some early footage for a Patapon anime and what appears to be a Gravity Rush movie too.
Here’s a video of Sony talking about its upcoming game adaptations:
God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn series in development
At the annual CES 2024 tech event, Sony dropped by to announce its newest project: a visualisation facility called Torchlight, which allows filmmakers to create digital scenes using virtual cameras and the Unreal Engine. The facility is already in use by various creators working on upcoming PlayStation game adaptations, two of which we spotted in the video above: an anime project based on the rhythm-strategy franchise Patapon, and another animated movie based on the action-adventure Gravity Rush games.
Some early footage of Patapon showed what appeared to be a direct translation of gameplay to early animated footage, where several Patapons group up to take down a giant elephant-like beast. A meatier look at the Gravity Rush project showcased motion capture work with the cast and crew, and a few seconds of footage where the protagonist leaps off a skyscraper onto a winged red beast below.
Sony then touched on two more adaptations it has in the works: the God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn live-action TV shows. The God of War series is being worked on by the creators of the sci-fi series The Expanse, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, and The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins. Much like these two shows, the God of War series will stream on Amazon Prime Video when it’s finally released.
The Horizon Zero Dawn series is currently titled Horizon, in development at Netflix. The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman is working on the adaptation, which reportedly includes game protagonist Aloy in its main cast. Sony confirmed at CES 2024 that writing on both series is underway, though it will be some time before we actually see footage of either project.
