Apex Legends' Final Fantasy 7 takeover has Materia and Buster Swords

Apex Legends is getting a hefty Final Fantasy 7 crossover event with new skins, items and Nessie summons.

Respawn Entertainment has fully unveiled Apex Legends’ upcoming crossover with Final Fantasy 7, and it’s a lot bigger than players might have expected. The crossover doesn’t just consist of a few skins, but actual gameplay additions like a wieldable Buster Sword, Materia Hop-Ups and a Nessie summon.

Here’s your first looks at the Final Fantasy 7 takeover:

Apex Legends x Final Fantasy 7

Electronic Arts is teaming up with Square Enix to build up anticipation for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which is planned for release next month. A crossover with Apex Legends is not the outcome we would’ve expected from such a partnership, but we’re not complaining. As part of the Final Fantasy 7 takeover, players will now be able to find a Buster Sword R2R5 on the map. Cloud Strife’s iconic weapon of choice can be picked up and used for melee attacks, which fill up a meter to unlock the Limit Break — an Omnislash-like flurry of powerful sword attacks.

In addition to the Buster Sword, you can also look for Materia Hop-Ups residing in random Cactuar-themed Loot Ticks, containing different colours of Materia that give players special weapon upgrades. The Blue Materia heals players for the damage they inflict, Green Materia shocks enemies when reloading empty weapons and so on. The Red Materia actually summons a mini Nessie companion that attacks enemies, so keep an eye out for that one.

In addition to all these little gameplay additions, there are of course plenty of cosmetics to unlock, and buy unlock, I mean buy. There are a total of 36 Final Fantasy-themed items included in this crossover to collect, some of which require a new currency — Gil — to unlock. Others will be available in the in-game shop and event packs, including unique skins for characters like Wattson, Horizon and Crypto themed after Cloud and his party.

Apex Legends’ Final Fantasy 7 crossover launches on January 9.
