Baldur’s Gate 3 took home the coveted Game of the Year award after a very competitive year at The Game Awards 2023.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has officially taken home The Game Awards’ highly-coveted Game of the Year award, pushing past incredibly stiff competition this year. Developers from Larian Studios, including the armoured-up game director Swen Vincke, came onstage to receive the award from Hollywood actor Timothee Chalamet. Other 2023 nominees for Game of the Year included Alan Wake 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Resident Evil 4, Super Mario Bros. Wonder and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Larian Studios wins big at The Game Awards 2023

Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 led The Game Awards 2023 nominations across every category, with both earning eight nods in total. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had seven, Super Mario Bros. Wonder and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom had five while Resident Evil 4 had three. The top two nominated games also ended up being the show’s biggest winners, with Baldur’s Gate 3 picking up six awards in total while Alan Wake 2 went home with three.

As for Baldur’s Gate 3’s full list of awards, Neil Newbon was the first to pick up the Best Performance award for his stellar performance as the vampire spawn Astarion. The Dungeons & Dragons game also won Best Community Support, Best RPG, Best Multiplayer and Player’s Voice. The Player’s Voice category is a fully fan-voted category comprising games like Genshin Impact and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was also released for Xbox Series X|S during the show today as if there were any doubt on why it deserved a Best Community Support nomination in the first place. The game’s latest patch introduced two new game modes and a whole new epilogue filled with post-campaign story content for the player and their companions.

The Game Awards is set to return in 2024 for a 10th anniversary awards ceremony.
